How many Texas DUers going to Voter Photo ID Hearing Mar. 10?.?.?
Tarrant County Democratic Party members are going down Tuesday. They will meet up @ TCDP HQ's 5:00 AM and will depart from Fort Worth @ 5:15. Not sure how many are planning on attending but there should be plenty of TCDP members coming down.

1. Me, me, me
And remember to bring your photo ID. Does your photo ID match your voter registration card exactly? Have you changed your hair color, or hair style. Maybe you lost a lot of weight. Maybe you got married and you remembered to change your driver's license but forgot to to change your voter registration card.

When was the last time you got carded?

Don't think that this is not going to impact you - it very well could.

These are some voters who may get challenged under this new bill:
Women-
Name on ID does not match voter registration including recently married, divorced, hyphenated names, and new middle names

Senior Citizens
Lack photo identification, may have utilities and mail under relatives name, lack citizenship documents

Students
Out-state license, mail goes to university p.o. box, no utilities, attending private university

Homeless
No Drivers license, no mail or utility bills

Low-income
Use public transportation, move frequently and may not have bills or mail with correct address,
DMV lacking in inner-city metroplexes
Citizenship documentation is expensive to acquire

Victims of identity theft
Identification is stolen and may not have 2 copies of other identification at time of voting

Natural Disaster victims
No identification or documents staying with relatives therefore no mail or utility statements in their name

Recent arrivals to Texas
Out-of- state identification, utility bills and other mail may not be correct name at time of election

Native American Indians
Lack photo identification and not likely to have government issued documentation.

Protect our right to vote. If you can't come to Austin, please, please take the time to call your Senator and just say "NO on SB362"

11. Would you be willing to testify?
Edited on Fri Mar-06-09 11:26 PM by sonias
Or better yet are you willing to tell your story to some of the non-profit groups collecting real case stories. A lot of these politicos can not wrap their heads around the fact that there are people who do not have a photo ID.

I found another case of a young man who is 20 years old. He's a victim of identity theft. He can not get a photo ID because it's taken him over 2 years to try to get this theft cleared up. It's costing him a lot of money and he doesn't have it. He doesn't drive either. Takes the bus everywhere and works out of his home. He was so excited about voting for Obama. His first presidential election. He said he would have been devastated if these laws had been in place last fall. He would have been on the sidelines deprived of casting his vote because he lacks government issued ID. He has a certified birth certificate now, but would still have trouble coming up with two pieces of ID. The utility bills are in his mother's name. He lives with a single mom raising two kids on her own.

Those are the kind of stories the Legislators and the media need to hear.

13. Be happy to talk to them.
I am a Candidate for Texas District 62 State Representative. I don't need a picture ID to run. I have been voting for half a century, also have been a pole watcher, and I have yet to meet or hear of someone who has shown up at the polls and been told, "I'm sorry, we show that you have already voted."

I would be happy to meet or talk to someone, I'm in Denison and I don't drive due to MS symptoms. I would have to cage a ride from someone to get down to testify.

14. I think a phone interview would probably be the way to go
Rather than coming to Austin for Tuesday's hearing. We have no idea how long this "debate" is going to go on, but your story is a very good one. You shouldn't be made to wait for hours to tell your story.

We definitely need to get your case facts. I just sent you a message.

Thank you for stepping up to give your story. You stand for thousands of others who may not even know their right to vote is in danger.

16. If I can't make it
shouldn't my State Representative stand in for me?

Another question. If there is a cost to obtain a picture ID in order to vote, isn't that a poll tax?

18. Is that a trick question?
Of course your Representative or State Senator should represent you. So let them know how you feel. Call their office especially if they have a district office or send them a letter.

If you happen to be a veteran, let them know that too.

thanks

I'm sorry I can't be there. Tuesday is the beginning of a new term at school.

The other night on the way home from work, it was the 1080 nightly round up. He had Boyd on and the lady from the GOP side. Boyd did a great job saying how this is unnecessary.

He kept hammering her on there is zero proof of any incidents of present voter fraud. She had no comeback, wouldn't touch the issue. And he brought up a few times the whole investigation done by Abbot that came up with nothing.

He was really good. :)

It was on krld 1080. I checked their website to see if they had the audio of it online, but I didn't see it.

Voter ID expert witness wasn’t confirmed for federal post

Hans von Spakovsky, slated to appear before senators today as the lead expert witness in favor of a voter ID law, is listed on a GOP handout as a former member of the Federal Elections Commission.

True, though von Spakovsky was never confirmed by the U.S. Senate for the post and withdrew from consideration.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution wrote here that Spakovsky threw in the towel on Dec. 31, 2007 after waiting two years for the Senate to vote on his nomination by President Bush.

24. Well well well, Hans von Spakovsky gets to testify and he isn't even a Texan
Looks as though the Texas GOP gets to decide who can come here and interject their politics in our State Elections.

But in all fairness he was appointed by "RECESS Appt." by GW:eyes: but he was NEVER confirmed by the Senate. This A'hole should NOT have even been allowed to speak on our State's Elections, period.

Other than Hans von Spakovsky, how did the rest of the Hearings go.

25. That is where they made thier mistake
I think he is a perfect poster boy for the partisan tactics of the Bush DOJ administration. They might as well have brought in Karl Rove, he and SpewWhacky are both bitter to the end partisan hacks.

There are so many instances in Hannity SpewWhacky's background of racial intolerance, that his testimony is "mud" at the current DOJ. And the fact that the Texas Rs brought him in to defend their bill makes it even more obvious what this is.

By the way the Senate voted 20-12 to pass the bill on strict party lines. Huffman did not vote.

27. This is more of the same Rush and R's agenda
Divisive partisan politics - they want Obama to fail remember and they are all following Rush' lead.

We knew they would pass it in the Senate, they had the numbers once they changed the rules. But at least all the testimony is part of the record, it was all transcribed and it will be part of the review that the DOJ gets when they decide pre-clearance for this case.

Assuming it passes. We still have a chance to kill it in the House where the House is more closely divided 76 Rs and 74 Ds.

Bless your office mate for sticking it out! Thank him/her for us!

Welcome to Texas politics!

28. And on a related note....
AAS 3/11/09
Obama rejects push to halt election oversight

DALLAS — President Barack Obama is rejecting the push by some Southern Republicans to end Justice Department oversight of election procedures as outlined in the Voting Rights Act.

"You don't just leave it up to the states to self-correct," Obama said Wednesday during an interview with 14 regional newspapers at the White House, The Dallas Morning News reported in its online edition.

The Supreme Court limited the reach of the Voting Rights Act on Monday, a decision that could make it harder for some minority candidates to win election when voting districts are redrawn. In a 5-4 decision, the justices ruled that a portion of the law aimed at helping minorities elect their preferred candidates only applies in districts where minorities make up more than half the population.

Who thinks he was talking about Texas? Texas surely has not self-corrected as evidenced by the majority party trying to shove voter suppression down the minority party's throat.
