Police: Texas girl, 12, shot dad in back of head
Source: Associated Press

KATY, Texas (AP) — Police say a 12-year-old suburban Houston girl fatally shot her father in the back of the head, possibly while he was sleeping.

Katy Assistant Police Chief Tim Tyler says a relative of 38-year-old Mark A. Nelson called 911 and summoned officers to the home Wednesday morning.

Officers found Nelson lying on his side in the master bedroom, shot once in the back of the head. Tyler told the Houston Chronicle that Nelson worked nights and may have been trying to sleep. He says Nelson was alone with his daughter when he was shot.

Nelson died Wednesday night at a hospital. His daughter was charged with aggravated assault before he died.

Neighbor Gabrielle Young told the newspaper there had been tension between the girl and her father.

"Tension"?

I'd guess child sexual abuse.

1. I generally won't make a guess
without actual evidence.

3. In Texas? Anything from child abuse to him not buying her an I-Phone.
We'll have to see.

10. What's Texas got to do with it? There are crazy incidents everywhere and
you must remember in a state of over 24 million people we might just have more. I've only lived in Texas for two and a half years so I have no undying love for it or any particular allegiance, for that matter, but I take offense that you don't seemingly think it's out of line for behavior here. imho

14. Yeah, I guess so.
I've been in Texas 25 years, so my opinion may be a bit skewed on the gun issue. Ever since they passed the concealed carry law, it seems to have gotten worse. I was mostly responding to the automatic assumption that it was sexual abuse.

25. You'll Just Use Any Circumstances To Say Something Ugly About Texas.

You've been doing this sort of thing for a long time now. If you're so down on Texas, how about moving the fuck away? If you're going to stick around, do some constructive work on dealing with the things that need fixing in the state, rather than taking every opportunity to make snide, broad-brush comments. We've got plenty of arrogant Blue State hate junkies at DU to handle such things; we don't need you helping them......

5. Don't be so quick to guess child abuse
Could be as simple as he was too strict with her.

In PA we had a case discussed on DU a couple of months ago of a 12 year old boy that took a shotgun to the head of his sleeping pregnant step-mom.

17. Actually, the houston chronicle article says abuse
the girl often had bruises and her mood would change anytime her father was around.

he was seen yelling at her a lot.

not making any judgments, but sometimes people do get what they deserve.

6. I wouldn't assume anything: Kid I grew up with killed his mom
with a 22 for hassling him over a bad report card.

12. I wouldn't be so sure of that.
Kids aren't naturally inclined towards murder. Usually when a kid kills someone there's more backstory than is readily apparent.

20. The sad statistics are that 1 in 4 girls are molested before 18
so it's certainly not an unreasonable question in a situation like this.

7. Add another one to the tally of people killed in their homes by their own guns.
As to the motive, I'll be looking to learn more about this.

8. Shouldn't really guess with something like that
Even children can be violently mentally ill.

Don't be too quick to judge the dead man.

I remember my sisterinlaw at age 5 or 6 trying to kick me in my very pregnant stomach screaming "i'm going kill your baby".

At 11 she tried to kill her mother with her cane, fortunately her mother turned and saw the cane coming at her and managed to ward off the blows with her arms.

She was in and out of special schools and hospitals until she reached 18.

It was always a fight to keep her in treatment.

Now she is society's problem as legally she is now an adult.

16. Because 12 year old girls shoot their dads everyday, for no reason.
:eyes:

But yeah, maybe she had mental health problems that had nothing to do with him. Odds are though that the OP is correct and he was probably abusing her for a long time.

15. I reckon she'll have to go out and git a job,
After she gets away with her slight slap on the wrist sentence. Since she is the only witness...

I don't buy too much into these insinuations. Neighbors seldom know the full story. My moron neighbors a few houses down thought we were fellow racists until we put out the Obama Biden. That's how little they converse with anybody. They just yesterday waved hello since that yard sign. Must be the economy is all right for them.

I could see moving it to the gun forum, but why state? Don't the mods think that this story is of any general interest?
