The 2012-13 budgets recently introduced by the Texas House and Senate slash total funding for the Texas Historical Commission by nearly 80 percent and for the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department by 25 percent or more, including elimination of state investment in local parks and trails.
As legislators face difficult budget decisions, it would be shortsighted to make such disproportionate cuts in these important agencies' budgets.
With every agency claiming to be more worthy, why should we defend these?
Because, in addition to protecting our unique and treasured Texas heritage, historic preservation creates jobs, promotes investment in small towns and urban centers, and maintains sites that are essential to Texas' thriving heritage tourism industry. In other words, funding historic preservation activities through the Historical Commission and Parks & Wildlife is a wise investment in our state's economy.
