William Y. Walter, former Washington state GOP chairman, dead at 84

TACOMA, Wash. -- William Y. Walter, who became Washington state Republican Party chairman after revitalizing the Pierce County GOP in the late 1950s and early '60s, is dead at 84.

Walter, a third-generation Tacoma native and owner of a logging supply business, W.S. Walter Co., died Friday, relatives said. The cause of death was not announced.

Walter was 39 when he took over the county's moribund Republican Party in late 1958.

Stressing grass-roots organizing, he built the county GOP from 70 precinct committee officers to 367 when he left the post in 1963 after being unanimously elected state Republican chairman.
