Seattle World's Fair in 2012?
Edited on Mon May-24-04 10:22 PM by Cascadian
This was something I had thought about today.

I know this sounds crazy but what if Seattle decided to have another World's Fair say in 2012? 50 years after the last one?

I know that many people feel that World's Fairs are not as attractive as they used to be. I am not so sure about that. I think that they probably need better marketing and newer ways to package and organize such events but I think Seattle could benefit from such a venture. I know it's strange of me to say this being a person who would rather see money better spent on things like transportation and schools but what about a "reunion" of sorts? To bring back the World's Fair during the 21st Century considering that Expo 62's theme was about life in the 21st Century. This could be the recurring theme for this one. We could even bring in Tacoma as a co-host city.

I suppose I am waxing nostalgia for the last two world's fairs in Washington state which I missed. I was not even around in 1962 and I missed 1974 in Spokane. Not too mention the one in Vancouver, BC in '86. I guess there is a sense of jealousy since I missed out. But what does everybody think of this idea?

I probably would guess a less than favorable response but what the hey! I thought I would throw it out here.

John

1. I think that would be a great idea
I have a soft spot for the '62 World's Fair, even though I wasn't alive then. I have some great souveniers, though, including a very cheesy Space Needle apron.:D

2. Wow, I was at all three of those!
Seattle in '62 (I was a toddler), Spokane in '74 (I was about to start my freshman year of high school, had broken my glasses and so could see virtually nothing), and Vancouver in '86 (I remember it rained so hard it soaked right through all my raingear - miserable day).

I didn't actually like any of the three, but I've enjoyed what they left behind in all three cities, most particularly the Pacific Science Center.
