1. If you're a Milwaukee County resident...
The best thing I can tell you is that if there's a long line at the main W-2 office (12th and Vliet), you can go to the W-2 satellite office in the basement of the YWCA. (MLK and Brown? 1600 or so MLK Drive.) They'll sign you up for a next day appointment at the main office, and tell you what you need to bring with you. You can (maybe) walk out with a Food Stamp swipe-card, that next day.

7. The YWCA on King Drive
Edited on Sat Aug-23-08 12:17 PM by mojowork_n
is at 1900 MLK. The cross street is Reservoir. In addition to the W-2 office, there's a "Dept. of Workforce Develpment" office, with a 'computer lab' for job searches. If you're applying for medicaid, you may want to know that there's also a DVR (Dept. of Vocational Rehabilitation) office there. If you have any kind of medical disability, you can sign up to get on the list to get certified, and then the State of Wisconsin pays people who work with you pretty actively, to find you a job. I went down there a few months ago to get the application papers for a friend with a spinal chord injury. She's still waiting to get 'certified,' but I've been told (a friend from the gym is one of those people paid by the State of Wisconsin to assist with job searches) that it can be worth the wait.

PS -- Along with Hunger Task Force, 2nd Harvesters runs their own, separate (?) food bank network:

You might find some listings through each link, that aren't included in the other's.

4. Milwaukee has 211 service.
Call 211 for referrals to agencies of all stripes (government and not).
