I'd have to say Oconto County. If most of the Oconto County residents had theur way, Democrats and liberals would be declared an "unprotected species", thereby letting anyone with a small game license shoot them on sight.

Pretty red, even more than the voters wanted.

8. Those are many of the people who fled Milwaukee during 'white flight'
I grew up in a small town in Waukesha county during the 60's and 70's.

When it was just an isolated small town during the early 60's, it was probably leaning Republican/Conservative, but I rememeber a lot of counter-influences, too. A few very liberal churches, etc...

But then the commuters came in and the character of the town I grew up in changed. More remote and distant, less forgiving, more 'scared' in general. We didn't used to lock our doors. Not even sure if we had a key! The sort of people who moved in couldn't imagine not locking their doors. They started whining about property taxes being too high, too.

From there on, it was all downhill.

BTW, I went to High School with Scott Jensen. He was an arrogant bastard back then, too.

9. That is the same for Indianapolis
They named it the doughnut effect.
The repugs moved out of Indianapolis into the surrounding counties. Not into outer part of Indianapolis because all of Marion County is Indianapolis as far as local govt is concerned.

Indy also has a ridiculous situation where they have "cities" within the border of Indianapolis that get to vote for two mayors. One for Indy and one for their small city.

We had our best showing ever in Hamilton County, but our good work was counter-balanced by the growth of the doughnut counties -- all heavily Republican.

24. Why Stevens Point is blue.
Edited on Wed May-18-05 12:31 AM by JonathanChance
UWSP and its college population is a big factor, plus you have lots of educated people working for the University and the buisnesses supporting it keep Point Pretty blue. You also have Union influence from the WSEU local at UWSP and from a number of union shops in the ares. Finally, you have a Catholic population that tends to feel that social issues are a greater concern for the church than birth control and abortion.

About the most conservative thing I ever saw Stevens Point voters do was strike down a ordincae that would have banned smoking in all workplaces, including restauraunts and bars. (I, myself opposed the ban on the grounds that it was too strict.)

25. That's one of the things that strike me about Wisconsin...
Rural Eastern WI leans quite red, while rural Western WI, (especailly SW Wisconsin) tends to be bluer. I guess the Western Wisconsin farmers haven't drank the Kool-Aid put out by the NRA, the Anti-Choicers, and the DNR haters.

30. I have a theory...
It comes down to $$$$$, in my opinion.

SE WI is suburbs - they can afford to be on their high horse.

The rest of WI rural is rather poor, and older. These are the people that realize what Dems have done for them (some lived the new deal).

It goes to show that we, as a party, need to frame issues in economic terms first of all.

We should not go a day without telling someone how important economic justice is. This includes health insurance, jobs, outsourcing, tax policy, etc.

This is how we can win.

28. Questions about Waukesha
While I grew up in the area, it's been a few decades since I spent any time there.

I remember that Waukesha used to have a fairly sizeable blue-collar Latino community, primarily due to people moving there in the 1940s and 50s to work at the Waukesha Engine factory.

Is there still a large Latino neighborhood centered around The Strand near the old Jimmy's Grotto stand? (showing my age there, I guess). Do they vote Republican, too?

There are also at least 3 Unitarian churches in Waukesha county, and at least one or two UCC churches that I remember being very liberal (back in the 70s). Seems hard to believe that they vote Republican now -- anyone know?

While there are plenty of areas that are undoubtedly, unconvertably Republican in Waukesha County (such as New Berlin), I can't believe that Democrats can't get any traction there at all (though I'm sure it's changed a lot since I grew up there).

Think of the most Democrat-rich counties in Wisconsin. You're thinking Milwaukee and Dane, right? Number three on the list for most Kerry votes in 2004? Waukesha County. Yup.

>> Is there still a large Latino neighborhood centered around The Strand near the old Jimmy's Grotto stand? (showing my age there, I guess). Do they vote Republican, too? <<

I have myself a humble abode (okay, it's a decrepit 70-year-old apartment) in the center of the city of Waukesha (Jimmy's Grotto territory ;)) and yes, there is a very large Hispanic population here.

During the election, and to this day, I have seen more Kerry/Edwards bumperstickers on vehicles in the City of Waukesha than anywhere else in the county. Once you enter the Town of Waukesha suburbs (Brookfield is a glaring example) or the rural towns of the county, you can't go a mile without seeing a Bush/Cheney bumpersticker.

As a sidenote, all the folks I work with are either from the Town of Waukesha, Brookfield, or Hartland, and they're all Bush supporters. :eyes:

35. Thanks!
Man, it's been 20 years since I had a ponza rotta! Then again, I think I'm *still* digesting the last one I ate....

Anyway, I looked up some population figures, and there are a LOT more people in suburban Waukesha County than I remembered. There's about 375,000 in Waukesha County, but only about 60,000 in the City of Waukesha itself. Even if every Democrat in the city voted, we'd still have a long way to go there.

Gotta find some way to reach those suburbs, I think. Back when I lived there, you could have gotten somewhere with farm and small business issues in Waukesha County, but I bet farmers and small businesspersons aren't so numerous there now.

Very busy planning wedding, getting my sealegs at work, and training for the horse show season.

46. I don't know if there is a group
but I imagine there must be. Maybe check in at REI or Laacke and Joy's to see if they have some signs up from different groups.

We just put in near the freighter docks, paddle around the big ships, and then head out into the harbor to ride the waves. It's really fun, especially if MMSD hasn't overflowed waste into the lake like they did last year :puke:

We always entertained putting in the Menomenee River in 'Tosa and going past Miller Park, but could never tell if there were impasses. Then it was so dry the rest of the summer last year, it was too shallow for even kayaks.

You can paddle the lakes out around Oconomowoc too and cruise down the Bark River too.

Whitewater kayaking? Uh probably not. But heading up the Milwaukee River and stopping at a pub for a beer is pretty fun too.
