Tory hold on power may not be as secure as it looks
Liberal-NDP coalition could present a viable alternative
The first Conservative cabinet of the 21st century signals the return en masse of Alberta to power after 13 years of relative absence and the best chance in more than a decade to turn the tide on Western alienation.
It includes a handful of untested Quebec ministers on whose frail shoulders rests the best hopes for the re-election of the federalist government of Jean Charest over the next year, and for a taste of peace in our time on the unity front.
As if those were not a heavy enough burden, the new cabinet will soon face a Liberal opposition that has more experience in government on its front bench than the Conservatives do in their entire lineup.
It will also have to navigate between three opposition parties that are philosophically closer to each other than they are to the rookie government.
