PRISON STUDY
Yesterday's report from the ombudsman for prison inmates painted a grim picture of Canada's correctional system -- particularly if you're aboriginal. His report describes how "systemic discrimination" is targeting native prisoners.

One of the report's most startling findings is to do with aboriginal women. Between 1996 and 2004, the number of female inmates has shot-up dramatically ... by 74 per cent. The grim reality is that one third of incarcerated women are aboriginal and half of them are placed in maximum security institutions.

Jo-Ann Daniels has spent a lot of her time speaking with native women in the prison system. She is a policy analyst with the Institute for the Advancement of Aboriginal Women in Edmonton. We reached her at her office.
