The 14-year-old daughter and stepdaughter of two veteran Toronto police officers was stabbed multiple times and left to die on a sidewalk near her east Toronto home in what police believe was a twisted plot allegedly hatched by another teenaged girl.

Sure would be nice to overhaul that YCJA, something I agree with the CPC on. Teenagers today are involved in some very heavy stuff. The Youth Criminal Justice Act angle is why I'm posting this story here.

1. I know what you mean..the youth of today....
The Greek philosopher Plato studied under Socrates. Plato complained
about the youth of the day, also. "What is happening to our young
people? They disrespect their elders, they disobey their parents. They
ignore the law. They riot in the streets inflamed with wild notions.
Their morals are decaying. What is to become of them?" I think this is
a direct quote, but can't find the reference at the moment.

Here's another one:
"I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent on
frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond
words... When I was young, we were taught to be discreet and
respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly wise
and impatient of restraint" (Hesiod, 8th century BC).

2. What exactly would you overhaul?
This part of the article you posted prompts me to ask:

"The Crown intends to seek an adult sentence for both accused should they be found guilty...An adult convicted of first-degree murder faces a minimum punishment of life imprisonment."

3. Is the crown being particularly tough because the victim was a police family's daughter?
It has to be asked.

4. Yes, it does matter that it's a cop's kid...
The prosecution, the cops and the Cons are doing their best to exploit this tragedy for political gain. With cops having sacred status post-9/11, it works for them all that the victim was a cop's kid.

As for sentencing youths to life sentences, no, I don't think that's right, nor do most Canadians.

Not that what most people think matters a whole lot these days. The right wing law and order crowd will dominate political debate on this, and the centre, centre-left parties will, as usual, be too politically timid to take them on.

a "life sentence" in Canada is only 10-15 years for most criminals. That's the least they should get for this cowardly murder. I can't believe you progressives are standing up for these neanderthals.

6. I'm not
though I do consider myself progressive. I personally think it's progressive to be anti-violence. I also think that actual 're-habilitation' is a rare thing (90% of a person's personality is formed by the age of 3). I think that prison's exist to keep dangerous people off the streets and if it were up to me anyone convicted of any violent offense (except in self defense) would do at least some jail time in almost every instance. When I say violent offense I mean murder, attempted murder, sexual assault ... but I also mean spousal abuse, child abuse, DUI, everything down to simple assault.
