Chalk River reactor back up to safety standards

Ottawa — It took a while, but the troubled Chalk River nuclear reactor once again meets safety standards.

Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. says a second cooling pump was hooked up last week to an emergency backup power supply capable of withstanding a severe earthquake.

The research reactor was shut down in November for routine maintenance and was only supposed to be closed for a few days.

But Canada's nuclear safety watchdog refused to let it restart after finding it had been operating for 17 months without either of two pumps connected to emergency power.

If this was so easy to fix, then why didn't AECL do it long ago? Was the whole thing staged as an excuse to fire Keen?

1. Looking At It

From afar, I would assume that it was the result of budget and a sloppy attitude to safety. If safety is not front and center then we will see more issues as the things grind along. They don't seem to just happen.

They have been starving AECL for years. Expect to see things like we can't afford it. Look at what happened in Ontario with Ontario Hydro.
