Tories to alter spending ways to suit courts
NEW ORLEANS, LA. and OTTAWA — Prime Minister Stephen Harper pledged yesterday to scrap controversial election-funding practices in the next campaign if his party loses a court battle over the matter.

Mr. Harper told reporters in New Orleans, La., yesterday that, while he continues to believe the Conservative Party has broken no laws in the so-called in-and-out scheme, it will conform to whatever the courts say.

"Our position is we always follow the law, as we understand it," he said. "More importantly, we always follow the law as it has been interpreted. We were following it in the last election - the interpretations that were put on that law in the past. If those interpretations change, though, we'll of course conform."

What choice would he have, but to obey the law? Talk about arrogant.

1. Totally arrogant...
...the guy's arrogance is simply stunning in its scope. There literally is no issue or scandal he can't brush off as a weak critique of his fantastically astute political mind. To him, the great unwashed just don't understand. Isn't this the same guy who described Canada as a third world nation? The Globe rightly pointed out that Paul Martin called for a public inquiry and it cost him his job. Look for Harper to avoid an inquiry at all costs...no matter which way he handles it, it's still gonna stink. Just like Mulroney, in the public's mind he's a slippery artist and once that perception takes hold, it's over.
