CP: Judge to rule whether British MP can enter Canada

A Federal Court judge will rule Monday on an injunction asking that British MP George Galloway be allowed entry into Canada for a series of anti-war speeches.

Lawyers representing groups trying to bring Galloway to Canada argued Sunday in Federal Court in Toronto that an injunction should be granted allowing Galloway to enter Canada for four days pending a judicial review.

The federal government advised Galloway in a letter this month that he could not enter Canada because he violated provisions in the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, specifically ones that relate to terrorism.

The charge that he engaged in terrorist activities is apparently based on the fact that Galloway delivered humanitarian goods to war-torn Gaza and gave $45,000 to the Hamas government. Hamas is a banned terrorist organization in Canada.

A Canadian judge has upheld the Canadian government’s decision last month to ban the outspoken British lawmaker George Galloway from entering the country for a speaking tour. Canadian officials say they banned Galloway on national security grounds, saying he provided financial support to Hamas, the Palestinian political party which was elected in January 2006 and controls the Gaza Strip.

5. British MP to sue for defamation after being barred from Canada

British MP George Galloway, an outspoken supporter of the Palestinian cause who was barred last month from entering Canada for a speaking tour, says he plans to sue the head of the Canadian Jewish Congress and CTV for defamation.

Speaking to an audience in Ottawa through a video internet connection from New York, Galloway said Thursday he will fight for his reputation, but did not say specifically how he had been defamed.

“I have instructed my lawyers in Canada to bring an action for defamation against Bernie Farber, the CEO of the Canadian Jewish Congress, and CTV, for comments he made that they allowed him to make,” he said.

“I am not a terrorist. I am not a threat to Canada’s national security.”
