Attention: All Canuck DU'ers!! Who would like to see Bill Maher on CTV?
Are you like me, would you like to see CTV/The Comedy Network round out their weekday late-night programming with "Real Time with Bill Maher"?? Wouldn't it make for a fine hour of political satire on Friday between 11pm and midnight (or an hour later on CTV perhaps)? After four satisfying "Daily Show" episodes with the brilliant wit of Jon Stewart from Monday to Thursday, an hour with sardonic Bill would be a great way to finish off the week!! Agreed??

Anyway, if you've got a minute to spare, fire off an email to programming@ctv.ca and let the programming braintrust know how you feel. It's worth a shot I think. From what someone I know recently told me, Bill Maher a while back lamented in a Canadian interview the fact that "Real Time" isn't shown in Canada. (Though perhaps it is on certain digital cable services, or through a satellite service...I don't know) Regardless....I wanna see Bill on Friday nights.....that three day wait for the next "Daily Show" is just too long!!

Thanks in advance,
CLS
:)

1. Maher
actually Real Time is not really political satire, it's more like a serious political discussion with a few jokes mixed in.

3. I'm actually a little ambiguous towards Maher these days...

...and have been ever since his appearance on one of the late night talk shows (either Letterman or Leno, I forget) the very day after the Iraqi elections. On the show he said: (paraphrase) "Look at the success of these Iraqi elections. It looks like George Bush was right all along, after the left got all uppity about the invasion..."

Now, I don't know if he felt this way for a day, a week, or a month after he said it, but that was enough for me to scream "fucking fraud". I can be rather unforgiving about these things (and besides, he ain't no Jon Stewart), so that was it for me. In fact, I have both cable and satellite. I may even get his broadcast, but I could honestly give a shit. That lame statement of his was it for me.

And since this is the Canada thread, I'll say this: I'm already very well served by cable/satellite (400+ channels between the two, truly global), and there's more to life than a non-stop diet of American politics. MUCH MORE, in fact.

But good luck with your email crusade. While you're at it, suggest they take the truly PATHETIC "Pop Cultured" off the air and swap it with "Maher". You'd be doing the whole country a great service.

4. Good Idea.....someone on DU is always referring to Maher's show and
it is frustrating not to be able to watch the show and see for myself what he's up to....CTV put Jon Stewart on ....so...perhaps they'd do the same for Maher!

6. he's OK I guess, but...

Frankly I'd prefer to have more Canadian political satirists.

What with the CBC lockdown right now, we don't even have Rick Mercer.

It's cool that CTV runs The Daily Show, but really it's not like we need even MORE American programming here. I wish the private networks would produce some good Canadian-made political satire.
