1. Wow talk about selective Obit memories...
Maybe because of her relationship with New Labour Minister Dennis McShane and the tragedy about their daughter's death....

I've read a dozen in memoriams in the news today about Ms Barnes.

None mentions she had a daughter at the age of approx 14/15 who was given up for adoption and subsequently became a heroin addict, hooker and perennial mental health patient suffering from bi-polar.

None mentions Barnes' five year cohabit with Channel 4 anchor John Snow and the famous foursomes holidays they used to take with Tony & Cherie before he entered Parliament in 1983 and right up until 1992.

None mentions how as a fledgeling ITN reporter she and the other ITN token female recruit Joan Thirkettle were twice arrested, questioned and held overnight in police custody over allegations they were shielding information about London's Hyde Park bombers.

Nor how these two divas were found to be supplementing their ITN salaries with special commissions for ex-Mossad fraudster Robert Maxwell.

When the internal ITN enquiry about the moonlighting was leaked to Mirror Newspapers it was only stopped from going public by Thatcher's personal intervention in 1989.

Etc.

Maybe a case of selective amnesia among the Obit writers today.

2. If she was single unmarried 15 year old Mum in 1959

then her child would have been adopted as a matter of course and she would have had almost no say in the matter. Nor would she have been allowed any contact after birth. What are you implying ? That somehow she was personally responsible for every medical problem, social failure and bad decision that her first child suffered in its later life ?

3. No implication. The daughter as far as I know had numerous
contacts with her birth mother after her adoptive parents' death.

She has been airbrushed out since Barnes went public about her relationship with McShane.

The son she has - Carol Barnes' grandson - ditto.

Barnes' sudden and unexpected resignation in 1999 from ITN marks a pivotal point in McShane's government career.
