Silvio Berlusconi trial may be suspended

The trial involving David Mills and Silvio Berlusconi could be suspended for a year, effectively ending any chance of a conviction, under measures proposed by the Italian government yesterday.

The Mills case is the last criminal trial hanging over the Italian prime minister.

Mr Berlusconi is accused of bribing the estranged husband of Tessa Jowell, the Olympics minister, with £350,000 in order to stand favourable witness in another trial. Mr Mills denies the charge.

But on Monday, two senators loyal to Mr Berlusconi asked for a law to be passed suspending all "non-serious" trials for a year.
