Asylum seeker who caused fatal crash can stay in UK
An asylum seeker who fatally struck a girl with his car then fled the scene has won the right to stay in the UK.

Aso Mohammed Ibrahim, 31, of Blackburn, hit Amy Houston, 12, in 2003. He was later jailed for four months.

He faced deportation but successfully invoked human rights legislation granting him the right to a "family life" in the UK.

Justice Secretary and Blackburn MP Jack Straw said he will be seeking to appeal against the decision.

I'm pleased they posted his picture - I'm sure someone will exact retribution if he does stay here.

1. So isn't the jail sentence "retribution," dd?
... or does the fact that he's an asylum seeker mean that he deserves an EXTRA kicking?

2. Its the jail sentence which needs review
4 months for killing a child ? So no - the sentence wasn't retribution.

3. But if it's the jail sentence that's wrong, why do you seem to be suggesting a revenge killing ...
... or vigilante-inflicted beating?

Understand your anger. Don't follow your logic.

a revenge killing.

So what did you have in mind, DD? Just a gentle beating up?

The trouble is that the guys who enjoy carrying out what you wished for are having such a good time that they just don't know when to stop ...

4. He wasn't prosecuted for killing the child, the 4 months was for
driving while disqualified and leaving the scene of an accident.

Presumably it was either decided that it was an unavoidable accident for which he was not at fault or that there was not sufficient evidence to convict him of charges relating to the death.

Tragic case. I do feel for the family.

And if I'm honest, I really wouldn't mind very much if he had been deported.

8. This is quite a big issue where I live ...
... due to a celebrated case (which happened two streets away from where I live) and the resultant change in legislation.

Presumably, the guy this strand is about would have been so charged, were there any grounds.

Yes, he was in the wrong. Yes, he was probably asking to be deported.

But I still have to ask myself what underlies DD's proposed "remedy" ...

6. Can't see anything that says he "caused" the accident

10. I understand that the maximum penalty for hit-and-run as such is 6 months...
obviously you can get more if you caused the accident by careless or drunk driving, but otherwise not. I do think that this is far too lenient and the penalty should be increased - especially as nowadays there is far more that can be done for many accident victims IF they get prompt medical attention, so it can really be life-and-death. But this man is more the rule than the exception.
