The publisher of the Daily Mail has agreed to pay "substantial" damages to Carole Caplin, the former lifestyle guru to Cherie Blair, over an article that falsely suggested she would disclose the Blairs' "sex secrets" for £1m.
Caplin sued Associated Newspapers for libel over the Daily Mail article, published in September 2010, that incorrectly suggested she would "blow the lid" on her former clients in a new book.
David Price QC, acting for Caplin, told the high court in London on Tuesday that Associated had apologised and agreed to pay his client's legal fees and substantial damages. Caplin, who was in court for the short hearing, launched her libel action against Associated Newspapers in May last year.
The article, headlined "Carole's £1m question: will she tell all about Blairs' sex secrets?", falsely claimed that Caplin had financial difficulties and would receive significant reward for the book.
