Earlier this year, we helped stop Rupert Murdoch’s plans to grab even more power. <1> His bid to seize total control of BSkyB was blown apart by the hacking scandal. <2> Now, we have a chance to change the rules so media barons like Murdoch can never again hold our democracy to ransom.
The media regulator Ofcom is consulting on plans to tighten the rules on media ownership. <3> We have 3 days to persuade them to back tough new rules to stop anyone controlling too much of the media.
We know that if we don't put Ofcom under pressure, they'll be too timid in the face of Murdoch's power. But if thousands of us send in emails demanding a ban on anyone buying up too much of the media, we can push them to act. It worked to stop the BSkyB deal - it can work this time too.
Can you send a quick message to the Ofcom consultation now? It only takes two minutes:
https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/stop-murdoch-for-goodInternational media moguls like Rupert Murdoch and Silvio Berlusconi have spent decades building up huge networks of newspapers, radio stations and TV channels. These media barons aim to control as much as they can. <4> It doesn't just make them billions of dollars - it also spreads their political influence and shores up the power of wealthy elites.
In May 2010, we started working together to stop Murdoch’s BSkyB power grab. <5> In July this year, we won. But we know that Murdoch doesn't give up easily. If we're not careful he may soon be back with fresh attempts to hack our democracy. So let’s work together now to make sure that the rules are changed to stop Murdoch for good.
It’s easy to send a message to Ofcom. There are writing tips and a template letter, and it will only take a few minutes:
