Public sector strike to be 'largest for a generation'
Public sector workers around the UK are staging a strike over pensions in what unions say could be the biggest walkout for a generation.

Thousands of schools are closed and hospital operations have been cancelled. Courts and government offices are among disrupted services.

Prime Minister David Cameron described the strike as a "damp squib".

Unions object to government plans to make their members pay more and work longer to earn their pensions.

2. Anyone on here go on strike today?
I didn't as I don't work in the public sector. It was noticable that with lots of people striking the big shopping mall in Sheffield (the ghastly Meadowhall complex) was very busy indeed.

3. Bit hard to strike
when you work for yourself quite aside from being retired. I suppose I could've refused to make myself any coffee today.

4. All three of the unions of which I'm a member - UCU, NUT and UNITE were out today ....
... but I wasn't able to take an active part as my mother passed away this afternoon.

We cheered and "honked" the UNISON picket as we left the hospital, however. She would have wanted that.

5. nss - I'm so sorry
My condolences - I lost both my parents in the last year or so. I hope you've plenty of family and friends to be with over the coming days.

7. My work situation is complicated, and I work in more than one capacity...
Which today meant essentially that bits of me were on strike and bits weren't! Upshot was similar to working part-time.
