I lived a bit south of you for many years - in Beaumont, at the Texas/Louisiana border. Hot and muggy, but great Cajun food. That is where my son was born, grew up, got married and started his family.

8. I've been through it 2X
moves to Deutschland, email me on DU and I'll give you the scoop. With preparation, it usually goes pretty smoothly. I've moved so many times I am a professional at it. LOL.

If it is a company move, don't worry about the "stuff" they pack it and move it for you. If you are moving yourselves, my advice would be sell any extraneous items, have a family member/friend take care of or get storage place for other things you don't want to bring with, and only bring most important stuff you can't live without. Unfortunately the euro makes it hard to replace even the most normal things without dropping big bucks. :(

Email me anytime. :hi:

but, only under these conditions:

1) if there are no unqualified derogatory comments made about the country, the people or culture.

2) if Germany as a country and Germans as a Volk are treated with respect.

3) if forum members are interested in a positive and peaceful relationship between the US and Germany, and between the US and the European Union.

4) if forum members respect the rule, BYOB and BYOP (P as in pretzels)

33. We need a MISSION STATEMENT! And then I can ask Skinner
Edited on Thu Feb-28-08 11:16 AM by 48percenter
I got a little ahead of myself, I just read the rules on starting a new group. We have 13 potential members.

Here are some of my ideas for mission statement, please feel free to help and give input, this is a group effort.

Here's my suggestions:

1. Group will promote intercultural exchange between German DU'ers and American DU'ers.

2. Give all the chance to improve knowledge of EU, Germany and the German language.

Got any other ideas?

48%er

34. Additional mission statement comments
1. Group will promote world peace by supporting intercultural exchange between German DUers and American DUers.

2. Group will help all members to improve their knowledge about the political landscape, the economical environment, and social atmosphere in Germany.

3. Group will motivate DUers to improve their German-as-a-second-language skills.

4. Group will inspire DUers to better understand the importance of healthy and positive relationships between the USA and Germany, and the EU.

more ideas? ... please change wording and/or add to the list.

39. If by "mission statement," you mean raison d'être
To use an old German expression...........

We could also do a running commentary on pros and cons of the whole
German system vs. the American system: health care (what's better here,
what's better back home), unemployment problems and underlying causes
of same (my wife is a German social worker who works with unemployed
people, and she gets those who need help as well as those who are
parasites, and MAN, are there ever both!), education (our children have had
the chance to experience school in both countries), etc. etc. etc.
Uncaring bureaucrats (probably an afliction of both countries), stuff like
that. Also: life in general? Except for some parts of New England, the small
town as an integrated social unit doesn't seem to be very typical in North
America any more. In our town, we have a circle of friends that all have
the keys to each other's house. Take care of pets, mail, check on damage,
break-ins, etc when one of us is out of town. I don't know anyone in the
States with that any more, with the possible exception of my sister, who
lives in an isolated area of a small town in New Jersey.

Also: who or what we see as parallels (to American Democrats) in German politics
Bound to be some heated discussions there! My wife votes Green and/or SPD,
although she hates plenty of some aspects of both on the national level.
We both despise the "Linken" as they refuse to repudiate many of the aspects
of the SED, and we have plenty of friends who suffered plenty under the Stasi,
including some who spent time behind bars for "Republikflucht." There are bound
to be some who think the "Linken" are OK despite that. Sparks will fly! LOL

Interestingly, I was just at the U.S. Democrats Abroad (Germany) annual
meeting in Göttingen (won the prize for knowing the most political
trivia!), which was interesting as well as good getting to know others
of "us" out there in the hinterlands.

Anyway, these are just a few suggestions. Probably useless, all, but ya gotta
start somewhere.

But for those of us who are interested, could we perhaps manage a get-together? Germany is such a small country that people wouldn't have to drive for days to get from point A to point B. Wouldn't it be great? How could we coordinate this? Any ideas?

DO NOT move to Germany! If you do, you will regret it. Give it some time and you will learn that after you set foot into this country you're basically giving up the rights that you had as an American. This is one of the most disturbing and backwards countries I've ever been in and I've been to some sketchy places. I don't even want to know what it's like the further east you go in Europe. Everybody wears the same creepy beige or brown jacket. Nothing's ever open and these people are the rudest, nastiest, and most racist, sorry bunch of SOB's I've ever seen! You spend most of the day waiting in freakin' line. It's like living in an institution and I'm suprised that these bastards haven't started shooting at me yet. If you think that racism in the South in the 1960s was bad, just try moving here. So why don't you just do yourself a favor, and don't. Otherwise you might get stuck in this nightmare time warp that I'm in.
