Tentative deal set on voting system

Agreement would allow Jackson to use 400 Hinds machines

The County Election Commission will control the mainframe computer, used to calculate the votes from the touch-screen machines. That had been the major sticking point during talks.

At Tuesday's City Council meeting, hours before the tentative agreement was reached, council members blasted the County Election Committee.

Bo Brown, Ward 4 councilman, responded to an allegation that someone from the county told the election system software vendor not to sell the city the necessary software to make a mainframe of its own.

"Obviously the county may feel that they have us by the you-know-what," Brown said. "I can't believe the vendor won't sell to us. That's not capitalism."
