Which states have the chair of reelection campaign running the election?
Edited on Mon Feb-20-06 06:12 PM by Melissa G
I believe Ohio, Minnesota and Nevada may have had this situation. Am I correct? Any other states?
Thanks in advance for your help!

1. Even one is to many.
No one with any sense of ethics can look at this and not see a conflict of interest.

4. Thanks Madmom, Was pretty clear about Kenny B, it's the other two
states i was hazy about... Also if any other states were prone to this hard to imagine it can be legal ethical insanity..

12. While this was true in the past w Blackwell, HB 3 prevents this in the
future, HOWEVER, What we have instead is the repuke candidate for Governor COUNTING HIS OWN VOTES BOTH IN THE PRIMARY AND MIDTERM. Wonder who is going to win?

:eyes: yeah,I'm thinking maybe that counting guy might have an edge... :eyes:What I'm wondering is when are folks going to make sure there are exit polls and safeguards to counter this craziness for the next election and take to the streets in protest if this turkey pulls his BS again!

22. I don't understand why Petro, his repub opponent isn't complaining about
this point. Blackwell is in a full fledge attack against Petro, I don't understand also why Petro isn't pointing Blackwell's failures in his role as SOS in administering the election. He just has to use Blackwell's own Lucas County Investigation to show Blackwell did not preform his job. I also wonder why Blackwell is allowed to throw dirt about Petro's connections to corruption espeically coingate when Blackwell has direct ties to the Noes as well. I wish the Dems would pick up on this.

5. Florida and Ohio are the ones that are always cited
I don't know about other states, but I would assume that those would be trotted out to support election reform as with the Lautenberg bill:

February 15, 2005

Lautenberg Introduces Legislation to Prevent Partisan Activity By Election Officials

WASHINGTON, DC -- Today, United States Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) introduced legislation to ensure that State officials in charge of supervising the certification of votes for federal elections are not also affiliated with the campaigns of those persons running for federal office. In the last two presidential elections, the Secretaries of State of Florida (Katherine Harris) and Ohio (Ken Blackwell) were not only in charge of certifying the votes of their respective states, but were also the Chairs of the Bush-Cheney 00' and 04' campaigns respectively. Senators John Kerry (D-MA), Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) are co-sponsors of Lautenberg's bill.

7. Hi Texas Lawyer, I'm trying to be consistent in the 04 election.
Was it still true of Florida in the 04 race? I was thinking not, but I could be wrong...
Thanks for your help!

30. Hi, Melissa
No, Glenda Hood wasn't state chairman for BushCo in 2004, but had ties to the family in other ways. It's an appointed postion in Florida. In 2000 she was a Bush elector.

The issue you're researching is a glaring example of conflict of interest that still sticks in my throat.

13. The current gov Matt Blunt
(yes, he is Roy Blunt's son) was the Sec of State who supervised the election in 2004 AND he was chair of the bush campaign in MO. He also won his election as gov in Nov 2004.

20. Suggestion... add to research forum threads.

Any connections found between the SoS office and party orgs might be good to add to the invidual election threads in the research forum. Though I wouldn't make a scene of it -- just annotate them in a matter-of-fact fashion. There's a thread for each state for 2006 elections already created there.

10. In CA, the SoS will be running the election where he runs for the office.
But I don't think he's a campaign official either for state or national election.

He and Oregon's SoS recently signed a statement that they would run their office in a non-partisan manner.

Thanks like a cop promising to be honest.

I'm sure some are.

11. In Spring 2004, the SF Chron ran a story on the number of
states where this was happening -- it was nearly half.

Christ on a trailerhitch.

18. There sure is a need for some ethical oversight in all these elections
Maybe we could get some universities to teach these guys ethics for elections 101. Common sense and /or checks and balances does not seem to enter into this!

26. Where IS that article? Has it been scrubbed
I know I didn't dream it. We, at that time, got the NYTs and the SFChron. And I remember doing a double take that it was in the Chron. It was a big story, on at least two pages. When I search for it, nada.

Thanks for the reference! PM me with an approx date range if you have one.
Hugs,
