Too Much, Too Fast, More Than They Can Chew

By John Gideon, VotersUnite.org and VoteTrustUSA
June 09, 2006

ES&S failed to set up Pottawattamie County's software to manage the name rotation, so it counted every ballot as if they were all printed exactly alike. Hence, the incorrect totals that they were receiving.

Keywords: Iowa, ballot programming, problem, vendor, ES&S, failed, tallies, results, Pottawattamie (my personal favorite!), threat, incorrect, election, money.

Discuss.

1. In Pottawattamie
from the link above:

"So it is really no surprise that County Auditor Mary Jo Drake knew there was a problem with the vote counting machine at the county, and the poll-site optical scan machines as well. She saw that a 19 year-old college student, Oscar Duran, was taking the lead on absentee ballots in the race to be the Republican candidate for County Recorder, and an incumbent with 23 years in office, John Sciortino, was falling behind. She noticed this when there were only 178 absentee ballots counted, and she watched as the divide between the two grew larger.

Once the totals were nearly complete, Drake had her workers do a hand count of the absentee ballots to see if there was a problem. The count on the tallying machine made and programmed by ES&S read Duran = 99 and Sciortino = 79. The hand count, however, told a different story – Duran = 25 and Sciortino = 153. There was definitely a problem and Drake knew this problem was probably evident on all ballot positions."

4. We need to see the absentee ballots..
... to see if the names on them were rotated as claimed on the regular.

What I have heard is that the absentees were not rotated like the rest of the ballots in other precincts. That the absentees were counted as ONE precinct, all the same.

If they were not differently rotated, then the excuse made for the miscount will be null and void.

Anyway, the fact that the machines screwed up is enough evidence of machine error to mandate audits and recounts of any and all elections, especially San Diego's.

14. Just passing this along.....
Did you ever think that maybe the votes were hacked?

Folks, this is a key vulnerability of the pukes - shady elections. There is a boatload of honest evidence detailing republican 'advantages' built into the process of electing.

Where are the pukes who are saying the Dems are equal? You know if they could point to one case of Dems stealing votes, it would be on Faux news! Every gawldurn night! Endlessly.....

There is something really wrong here. Being spineless about the corrupted voting systems and wearing a pink tutu while typing about it on DU, is really quite the rage with wanna be republican leaders.

Don't be like them, puhleeze.

What if there were no paper ballots in Iowa?

3. 2 perspectives
From my standpoint as a programmer for 3 decades, and knowing that ES&S has bitten off way more (typicically short schedule) business than they can likely handle on a timely basis, I wouldn't want to be the coders sitting in cubicles trying to keep up with the expectations that marketing has dumped on their desk. It has to simply suck, and mistakes are going to happen.

From my standpoint of having spent time on the front lines of the fight over electronic voting, ES&S is a piece of sh** and should be driven out of business along with the rest of the bastards. The aforementioned mistakes that are "going to happen" should not be a part of elections reality and I place the entire blame on ES&S for being so freaking greedy that they have committed their organization to the workload that they have clearly accepted.

Traitors...

And nothing proves your point better than to be able to shove those papers in someone's face and say, "See, asshole? You LOST!"

10. E-voting meets its Pottawattamie.
"Gahanna" was never going to catch the public imagination.

But no one can pass up an opportunity to say "Pottawattamie".

11. "Pottawattamie"
Hmm... I think you're onto something here. I'm envisioning some sort of political cartoon or emblem involving a hippopotamus. The right image could be very eye-catching and memorable.

17. Think "Waterloo". If Napoleon had been defeated in
Cremontlyville or East Fleeverhaven, we wouldn't have that well-known idiom of someone meeting their Waterloo.

13. "BALLOT PROGRAMMING ERRORS"
That phrase says it all. Because who would believe that election-machine-company-programmers have to write programs to count each election? Isn't it obvious how much opportunity there is for 1) mistakes and 2) fraud?

Mistakes aside, the evil blend of corporations wanting to sell more election machines and politicians lusting after permanent power, freed from the vagaries of actual voters, is a recipe for permanent fascism.
