Without the monies raised by David Cobb and Ralph Nader, the ability of voting activists to extend the examination of the Ohio '04 vote long enough to determine certain unsavory patterns would have been impossible.

Why a DU'er cannot discuss the impact that the third party has on the Murican style, Corporate controlled oligarchy is beyond me. The countries in this world who have four, five and even more credible candidates on their ballots have thriving democracies. They have meaningful health care, they have sober foreign policies, they have an involved electorate.

Things that would be very nice to experience here in this nation.

a belated valentine to la sfexpat2000... when i first was shown the pathway to this place, sfexpat2000 was going through a hurricane of trouble. all i could offer was sympathy, not even a bit of tea. all that has settled in whatever way such matters settle. but in her life--and if you're in a similar situation, hopefully in yours too--may there be such as this voice:

SFexpat2000--Beth--is one of the wisest, more knowledgeable DUers on many issues. I know her work best on election reform and Latin American issues, and her understanding of these matters is profound. She deserves the respect and gratitude of all genuine DUers. She is the sort of DU poster and commenter to whom I look for the best opinion, information and advice. Whatever she has to say merits serious consideration and thoughtful discussion. And she is absolutely right about the value of third parties to the election reform movement, who have often come to the rescue when our own party has miserably failed us, as they have on rightwing corporate-controlled, "trade secret," proprietary vote counting systems, fast-tracked across the country with virtually no audit/recount controls. Our party leadership has been disgraceful on this matter--from permitting the installation of these systems, in the first place, to follow-up efforts such as recounts, analysis and litigation. And now they are actually covering up for these bastards--as with their abandonment of the FLA-13 case! It is the primary reason--in addition to the Iraq War--that we need to clean house in the Democratic Party and sweep the "old guard" leadership away, if we want to save our DEMOCRACY.

SFexpat2000 has been an important leader on these matters, here at DU, and in her activist life. She can say whatever she likes, and we had better listen up, because she has the good of our country at heart--the soul of our country, its most fundamental principles.

Beth is one of the most highly respected and beloved members of DU. She and I have a friendship of close to three years. We have fought very serious battles closely with one another. We don't always see eye to eye, and have been through some prickly issues, work out prickles, come to understand one another and ask for and give support to one another on issues often. I regard her as a friend, and am sure she does me (maybe kind of a difficult step-sister).

We talked by PM today, and I expressed hope that she will research the positions of the candidate and post them so that we might find positions that we can give our support and strength to.

Beth works very hard on this issue and many others. I know her work, commitment and dedication well, having worked with her on projects and difficult challenges.
