Culver signs into law $5 million voting system upgrade

Associated Press - April 1, 2008 2:14 PM ET

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Governor Culver has signed into law a bill that creates a uniform statewide voting system and provides a paper trail if a recount is needed.

The bill provides $5 million in state money for new optical-scan machines.

All 99 counties are required to use such machines, which scan paper ballots that could be counted by hand later. The changeover is expected to cost about $10 million, with counties picking up the rest.

Such decisions have traditionally been up to county election officials, which means Iowa has a patchwork of voting systems.

Now if we could get the people to do a second Hand Count of ALL those Paper Ballots at the close of the election AT THE POLLING PLACE, they could kill two birds with one stone, a Hand Count of ALL the Paper Ballots would give Holt an automatic audit of the secret vote/counting machines and at the same time give voters confidence in the election results. :)
