The debate isn't new.
Whether online or in isolated news reports around the country, critics of electronic voting have argued its dangers while elections officials defended the technology as secure and accurate
SNIP... Singer filed the whistle-blower case in July 2006, but it remained under wraps for almost two years as federal authorities pondered their role in the case. In the simplest sense, Singer alleges Hart lied to secure government contracts. The lawsuit contains no specific references to Kane County or Illinois, though Singer contends Hart's tactics were likely used wherever they sought business.
SNIP...While Friedman contends no government officials can prove the vote cast on electronic machines can be accurately linked to tallies, White argues Illinois is "far ahead" in security because it mandates paper trails no matter the voting system or style
SNIP..."The information was out there. They weren't paying attention," she said. "The Kane County Board, they should take this very seriously and be looking for alternatives. How can they hold an election with this equipment?"
The lack of traditional media attention turned the issue into "blogosphere versus industry," in Schultz's view, which made it easy for politicians to discredit critics. Singer's federal court case will put the issue on the right stage, he said.
