GOP Objections Derail Paper Ballot Bill for Now
GOP Objections Derail Paper Ballot Bill for Now
By Molly K. Hooper, CQ Staff
Republican opposition on Tuesday led to the defeat, at least for now, of a bill offering federal help to localities that don’t trust their electronic voting machines.

The bill (HR 5036) would authorize reimbursement for states and counties that convert to paper ballot voting machines before the November elections or need help paying for manual audits afterward.

Democrats put the bill on the part of Tuesday’s calendar used for non-controversial measures. It was brought up under suspension of the rules, which required a two-thirds vote for passage. But the final tally, 239-178, fell far short of the margin needed.

Numerous GOP House members opposed the bill because of its high price tag, said Vernon J. Ehlers of Michigan, ranking Republican on the House Administration Committee.

2. "GOP House members opposed the bill because of its high price tag"
The 'price' being the GOP would be losing more elections if they're conducted fairly.

Republican Objections Derail Paper Ballot Reimbursement Bill for Now
By Molly K. Hooper, CQ Staff

<snip>Democrats put the bill on the part of Tuesday’s calendar used for noncontroversial measures. It was brought up under suspension of the rules, which requires a two-thirds vote for passage.

The final tally, 239-178, fell far short of the margin needed.

Democrats have other options for moving the bill through the House.

They could take the measure to the Rules Committee and return it to the floor under a regular order. Then, it would need only a simple majority to pass, though opponents would still have some procedural options with which to try to thwart the bill’s progress.

After the vote, Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer indicated that the measure was not likely to see further action in the House.

Hoyer, D-Md., said the measure would die in the Senate even if House Democrats brought the bill back using different procedures.<snip>

5. Where's the Fire?

"There is a simple reason that Florida law and the law in many other states calls for a careful check by real people of the machine results in elections like this one. The reason? Machines can sometimes misread or fail to detect the way ballots are cast, and when there are serious doubts, checking the machine count with a careful hand count is accepted far and wide as the best way to know the true intentions of the voters".

If you need “The Emergency Election Assistance for Secure Elections Act”, Americans might ask, "what do you mean elections aren't secure", and if they are not secure, "Who messed up"? "How come I was not informed that they weren't secure"?

If this passed the Politicians would of had some splaining to do.

7. "Convert to paper ballot voting machines" , so there are states that don't have a paper ballot?
Edited on Tue Apr-15-08 11:47 PM by kster
How did that happen? Why is it that some states don't have a paper ballot back up? Why haven't I heard of this? Who screwed up?

Any eight grader would know better than to have a paperless election.

600 million (of our money) is way to much to fix something that should have never happened if these politicians (crooks) were doing their job IN THE FIRST PLACE!
