my sisters and I are in the middle of a North and South marathon and we can not find out why they changed actors in the roll of Billy Hazzard

1. Probably because of this:
"All three series (called "books") aired on the ABC-TV network in the United States. The first two series, entitled Books I and II, were an enormous success with audiences and critics, and remain among the highest-rated television miniseries in history. However, Book III, which aired eight years after Book II, was poorly received by both critics and audiences. Many of the actors in Books I and II did not appear in Book III, and the murders of such favorite characters as Orry Main and Constance Hazard angered many fans."

3. Loved Books I & II
I couldn't even watch Book III, though. First of all, no Patrick Swayze. He was North & South. And, second, I thought that they ended Book II perfectly. There was no need for the third book, in my opinion.

As for Billy Hazard - the original actor became a director shortly after making the first mini-series (he directed Blue Crush recently). I also think they wanted to age the character. Parker Stevenson was married to Kirstie Alley at the time (she was his sister in the movie) and I always found that kind of creepy!!

4. They taped it in Charleston, SC, where I lived
everyone and i mean EVERYONE in Charleston tuned in for that show because THEY TAPED IT IN CHARLESTON.

My uncle was an extra in it as a carriage driver. You see about .000034 seconds of the outline of his head on screen :)
