They started showing Sex In the City on late night TV lately and I started watching it..
and now I really know why I hate this show.. these women are just SOOO shallow... ugh!!!

I guess I'm the last person in America to find this out..

In some ways it reminds me of the horrible women on Absolutely Fabulous.

It's like a car crash you can't look away from.. You keep hoping against hope that one of the characters on this show has at least one redeeming quality...

1. A show written by a gay man of straight women acting like...gay men.
Edited on Tue Mar-31-09 12:50 AM by Captain Hilts
I just don't know women like that.

Ab Fab was kind of a female version of Cheech and Chong.

The dirty talk is cut out, as is Kim Catrall running around topless.

19. The rude language was the best thing about it!
And Miss Catrall was more than topless--she was quite a fearless actor, baring all, bless her heart!

It always seemed that when the script suffered, they made that poor woman swing from a chandelier buck nekkid or something!

And he keeps showing up to her apartment professing his love and banging her silly. Her facial expressions were the best.

50. Funny you should say that, as that is all I know...
Then last summer I saw the movie and was relieved that they didn't use too much profanity. It's like Howard Stern: I listened for several years and when he went to Sirius and I heard him once, I didn't like the cuss words...

The bottom line was the show is about friendships..... loved the show and the humor and of course Mr Big.
The fashion, the shoes -shallow of course - but FUN.

9. You say that like it's a bad thing. Don't take it so seriously.
I really doubt anyone involved in that show thinks of it as a role model for the women of New York. It's a chick thing, just like movies about guys trying to get into strip clubs are a guy thing.

12. Umm movies?

I'm trying to think of a regular TV or even HBO show equivalent.

At least on the Sopranos being bad had at least some kind of threat of consequences for the bad guys, you got whacked, you got shot, you got arrested, etc., etc. The behavior of the AbFab and SITC girls seems to lack consequences for bad behavior.

17. Doug...they're comedy shows. Comedies don't have consequences, that's the whole point.
It's OK to laugh at how silly and shallow they are. That's why the show is there. Even more so with Absolutely Fabulous. If you don't find this screamingly funny then I dunno, smoke some weed or something until it makes more sense.

Seinfeld's characters were the ultimate shallow characters but there were always comic consequences for their stupidity and greed.

18. There are a lot of shows where people are meanspirited
"Seinfeld" is the perfect example. All the characters were pretty self-centered and absorbed. Unless you want to say they got their come-uppance in the end with the lame finale and going to jail, they never really had to "pay" for their jerky behavior.

Comparing being a jerk or a snob to being a murderer or a hitman is like apples and oranges.

There's a spolier here......move on if you want to keep being surprised even if you hate the show!

When Carrie dated the dude played by John Corbett (I think he was a woodworker or cabinetmaker)......he wanted to settle down and she didn't. So they ended the engagement. They could have very easily done the "chick flick" thing and have it turn out he was cheating and make him out to be a bastard, but they didn't. Carrie really looks like the bad guy because she dropped the seemingly sure thing that every woman wants.

29. Sex and the City WAS an HBO show--that's where it used to live.
When the girls treated their boyfriends poorly, they ate ice cream and felt bad about it. They spent enough time lounging about and feeling bad about this thing or that. They were forced to "suffer" many bad dates, too.

ABFAB isn't like Sex and the City, though--ABFAB was an Over The Top farce.

Change the channel if it bothers you, though. Life is too short to be upset by....tee vee.

30. Not so many channels at the moment - unemployed, satellite is off
and I'm forced to watch over the air analog channels or watch the DVD's I've already seen a million times.

I normally don't watch this kind of stuff at all and stick to the "non-fiction" type channels for the most part (NatGeo, History, Biography, Military, C-SPAN, NASA, news channels etc.)

31. Have any of your local stations gone to digital yet?
Some of those stations broadcast more than one signal, making for more choices.

You can always watch TV on the internet--I do that a lot when I'm travelling. Here's one site with some fun shows: http://www.hulu.com/

Go to your local library, too--they've often got a load of great DVDs that you can check out--I get my oddball foreign films from those guys.

The subchannels are usually just rebroadcasts of the news because they don't have enough material to actually utilize all these extra channels that we supposedly need rightnowthisminute!

where Samantha went for her first HIV test, or when the Cynthia Nixon character got pregnant. The show wasn't supposed to be showing life lessons - it was sheer entertainment with no interest in teaching lessons. But I disagree that consequences were ignored.

See, the whole idea of the show is that now women can do to men what has been done to us for all these years! And the fact is that most women in the real world still probably are fairly traditional, in terms of their behavior, so it's just more of a fantasy: the idea of using a man for sex!

36. You nailed it
Show was about friendship and incredibly popular in New York as it was a love letter to our city. I read an interview with one of the women who said she was the 5th lady in the show. The only women that didn't ring true was Samantha - her character was much more gay man than 40-something woman. But I saw parts of the other girls in many of the people I know.

though I've seen the episodes so many times that it's not funny!

About the fashions? Ugh! Carrie's clothes were usually pretty fugly and I doubt a regular woman would want 90% of her outfits. Another fashion disaster was Kim Cattrall's character. OMG--she had so many tacky outfits in garish colors! My fave was Miranda. Charlotte was too preppy for my taste...

Some more than once. I only started watching it when I moved to Korea and was looking for something in English. They play it here every day and once they finish the entire series, they start over again. The first time through I kind of enjoyed it, by the time I started seeing some of the episodes for a second time I realized how shallow the characters really were. I think Carrie was my least favorite character. I did like Aiden (spelling?) though.

Where in Korea? I spent 3 months in Taejon in 1998. English language TV was so scarce over there that I started watching British programs like Soldier Soldier.. English TV is just sooo boring. I don't get why, English movies are usually pretty good.

49. Really? I started watching when they began reruns on regular tv
(I don't have cable). I wanted to see what all the hype was about. I ended up loving it. It's a drama-dy, which means that between the laughs are serious moments. So that prevents it from being shallow, IMO. I find a show like "Seinfeld" unwatchable because it's merely zany and has no touching elements to it. I also think SATC is cleverly written.
