Guiding Light Cancelled
http://www.nypost.com/seven/04012009/tv/guiding_light_cancelled_162386.htm

CBS has cancelled "Guiding Light"--which has aired, in one medium or another, for 72 years.

The veteran soap's last episode will air Friday, Sept. 18.

The cancellation of "Guiding Light" is yet another nail in the coffin of daytime soaps--many of which have fallen by the wayside due to declining ratings.

This is really sad. I used to watch it in the late 80's (they filmed an episode in the Keys and I will always remember Reva driving off the old 7-mile bridge).

1. My Grandmother used to knit and watch "her stories" when she came to visit...
...The Guiding Light was one - and another was As the World Turns.

3. What's "really sad" about it? Nobody watches it and nobody cares.
Hell, I didn't know it was still on.

When's the last time you watched it?

5. NOOO!!!!!
I watched that soap since the early 80's, not so much in the past 5 years, but still. Will Roger Thorp and Alan Spaulding be resurrected, or are they still alive? Reba has been brought back so many times haha.

12. A dubious distinction!
I almost didn't want to admit it but what the heck. I also recall Meg Ryan on As the World Turns. Oy!

13. I never watched it, but my great-aunt and grandmother watched it
religiously. And I particularly remember, one day in '65, '67 or so, Auntie Ann watching it, then gasping, crossing over to the TV to get a better look, and turning and saying

"That's a 'schwartzer'! Isn't it?"

when they introduced a new character, a doctor I think, who was !!Black!!

I don't think she ever got over the shock, poor dear.

15. I think Guiding Light was one of Kevin Bacon's first acting
gigs. He was on there before he did Animal House.

19. I Just Pray It Doesn't Spread to OLTL Right Now
I place blame for the demise of GL and other soaps squarely on the shoulders of network brass who put too much emphasis on focus groups and data and refused to allow creative people to do what they do best.

My favorite soap, One Life to Live, was stuck in suckitude for 10 years until we finally got a decent headwriter who respects the show's history and viewers. And part of me thinks it has to have been an accident, because ABC and Brian Frons have killed the integrity of its other soaps.
