I truly think Cronkite was much more important in our history than Michael Jackson.

Yet, you can expect that nothing really big will be organized and that he won't be a news item tomorrow.

Cronkite has been retired for almost thirty years, so there are a couple of generations who aren't very familiar with him.

I think his death was milked by the media and his family and that a lot of people made a good buck from his death.

As for Cronkite, they can't really milk it, so they'll talk about it for a day or two and that will be it.

Both Michael Jackson and Walter Cronkite are important figures, but in the purely market oriented media of today, the report of his life, legacy and achievements will barely be covered, due to the fact that all those pseudo-reporters know they are a shame to the profession.

Cronkite raised the bar very high, but it does not mean that any of these pundits cannot try to raise it even higher.

Yet they all act as if they were doing a totally different job.

i just think your post is stupid. Robert McNamara died recently and he has had more influence in this country ,e specially on one major event in our history(vietnam war) and he got almost no coverage while others like Ed McMahon and Farah FAwcett got a lot more.

All these news sharks that had covered his legal and financial troubles and had done everything they could to wreck his reputation (whether he deserved it or not) could not find all the words they needed to show how high their esteem for him was, when in reality I am sure they truly despised him.

I am not saying that I truly loved or despised MJ. Like many people I had mixed feelings about the man and when he died I was surprised by his untimely passing, but most of the coverage was truly obscene in the way the milked it, and this with a total lack of shame.

It is not Michael Jackson I am criticizing, but the media.

But that is the sad feeling I have.

Tim Russert was a personal close friend on a lot of the newsmen of today. His untimely death shocked all of them and they covered his death more than they would have otherwise.

We can only miss Tim, because his career was far from over, and he would have done a great job and shown the way during the November elections.

The only reason MJ's death is getting so much coverage is that there are so many weird developments that keep it alive.

There was a lot of coverage of Tim Russert's death. We haven't seen the last of the Walter Cronkite coverage, by any means. He will get the recognition he so richly deserves.
