He was more important than MJ in our history, yet will barely be honored
This is not a Pat Buchanan moment.

I truly think Cronkite was much more important in our history than Michael Jackson.

Yet, you can expect that nothing really big will be organized and that he won't be a news item tomorrow.

2. Are you fucking high?
Do you not remember when the media drowned us in their tears for two solid weeks after Tim Russert died?

Cronkite was LEGITIMATELY a giant. He will get his due. "Won't be a news item tomorrow"... fucking morons on this site anymore...

12. The difference there though is that Tim Russert played the game the corporate whores wanted him to.
Granted, I'd take him over Douche Gregory or Chuck Fraud any day, let alone any tool on FAUX.

But in order for the media to truly pay tribute to Walter Cronkite the way they did Timmy (or Michael) they would have to acknowledge how far they have fallen since his retirement from the CBS News desk.

13. You do not have to insult me
It's not because you disagree that you have the right to call me names.

No, I am not a moron.

But, yes, I do fuck.

15. I think it may be different because Tim Russert still had a news program and was still very much a
part of the political scene.
Cronkite has been retired for almost thirty years, so there are a couple of generations who aren't very familiar with him.
Still...its going to be a new item tomorrow and for at least a week.
Now, how any of this relates to Michael Jackson beats me.

And who can say which of these two great men, both artists in their own right, made the more important contributions to society?

8. No I don't.
I don't condemn the fact that they made a bit deal about MJ's death, I just believe his death had a very over the top coverage, and that Cronkite will be barely honored.

5. I think you're right.
The public will barely notice, especially the segment that knew MJ well.
Cronkite had already retired by the time they were adults so they didn't get to know him.

6. I was just a young kid when Murrow died.
It is only because of my interest in broadcasting history that I came to learn of his importance.

The movie Good Night And Good Luck has helped provoke contemporary interest in his finest moment.

Yup, prison pal James Brown got all the press.

20. DU is not the world
We're a little bit more educated that the average.

It's also here, and not on Free Republic that we can only morn the passing of a man who represented true investigative reporting, something that the Fox News crowd doesn't give a damn about because they don't know what it is.

16. I did not attack Michael Jackson
I think his death was milked by the media and his family and that a lot of people made a good buck from his death.

As for Cronkite, they can't really milk it, so they'll talk about it for a day or two and that will be it.

Both Michael Jackson and Walter Cronkite are important figures, but in the purely market oriented media of today, the report of his life, legacy and achievements will barely be covered, due to the fact that all those pseudo-reporters know they are a shame to the profession.

Cronkite raised the bar very high, but it does not mean that any of these pundits cannot try to raise it even higher.

Yet they all act as if they were doing a totally different job.

Wait... they are.

21. and the coverage of Jackson can't really be described as him being honored
while Cronkite is mostly being honored right now.

i just think your post is stupid. Robert McNamara died recently and he has had more influence in this country ,e specially on one major event in our history(vietnam war) and he got almost no coverage while others like Ed McMahon and Farah FAwcett got a lot more.

27. There were not too really negative about MJ
All these news sharks that had covered his legal and financial troubles and had done everything they could to wreck his reputation (whether he deserved it or not) could not find all the words they needed to show how high their esteem for him was, when in reality I am sure they truly despised him.

I am not saying that I truly loved or despised MJ. Like many people I had mixed feelings about the man and when he died I was surprised by his untimely passing, but most of the coverage was truly obscene in the way the milked it, and this with a total lack of shame.

It is not Michael Jackson I am criticizing, but the media.

23. I hope I am wrong
But that is the sad feeling I have.

Tim Russert was a personal close friend on a lot of the newsmen of today. His untimely death shocked all of them and they covered his death more than they would have otherwise.

We can only miss Tim, because his career was far from over, and he would have done a great job and shown the way during the November elections.

"because his career was far from over, and he would have done a great job "

and Jackson was better at what he did than Russert was at what he did.

19. CNN, MSNBC and FOX
are all covering it. Katie Couric is on CNN right now with John King. Barbara Walters and Connie Chung were interviewed by phone over on Fox.

John King just said that Cronkite "held America's hand during some of the worst times". He is going to be honored and remembered...

he will get his due in mature areas, like news shows and such. Entertainment news will show it for one day, but what can we expect, MJ was a huge entertainer - like Elvis or bigger worldwide.

30. I think you're underestimating the MSM
The only reason MJ's death is getting so much coverage is that there are so many weird developments that keep it alive.

There was a lot of coverage of Tim Russert's death. We haven't seen the last of the Walter Cronkite coverage, by any means. He will get the recognition he so richly deserves.
