LBJ drank Fresca, you mook!
I was just watching that newly retooled Millionaire show with Regis Philbin. Eh, its not that great. But I was interested because the contestant was up to the million dollar question. Just your typical young "educated" hipster, working to be a lawyer, I think? Cut some really close hairs (Don't ever take advice from Bill Nye the Science Guy) but he made it to the last question which was LBJ always had these drinks on tap (I think on AF1) Coffee, Tea, Coke, and what?

The choices were Yoo-hoo, V-8, Fresca, and something else.

The answer is Fresca. I knew it, but then again I am a history buff with a heck of a lot of time on his hands.:eyes:
But he didn't know that, he went with the audience who said Yoo-Hoo. :wow: Yoo-Hoo? LBJ, the 10 gallon hat Texan drinking Yoo-Hoo, come on. Boy did he literally melt into his seat after he got that wrong, bucked all the way down to 25 grand (poor thing:sarcasm: ) from a possible cool million because he didn't know Fresca.

Never hurts to learn some useless historical factoids. Never know when they may come in handy, eh?

Sorry, just had to ramble for a bit.

Would any of you have gotten the question?

1. Amazing - just last night at a party someone mentioned liking Fresca and I told her it was LBJ's
favorite. Boy, did I get some weird looks!

High five to you!

3. Youth -
the things they don't know.

I had a disagreement with someone recently who proclaimed that LBJ had been a lawyer, and refused to believe me when I told him LBJ had been a teacher.

But, no, I would not have known that, and, given his Southern roots, I, too, might have guessed Yoo-Hoo, although it's hard to imagine LBJ ordering "a Yoo-Hoo for Mr. Jones," isn't it?

7. Technically
Fresca can be considered a southern regional drink since it was manufactured by the Coca Cola Co. in Atlanta, but then again we wouldn't label Coke an exclusively Southern drink. However, it was a grapefruit flavored soda designed for "sophisticated adult tastes" i.e. for cranky old people. So, it would stand to reason that LBJ would prefer cranky juice over kid and youth friendly Yoo-Hoo.

11. NOW, it's national. Not until the 1960s.
Drink it at ten, two and four...

6. The book, "Invincible Summer," about the Roosevelts, mostly in the 1920s/early 30s
has a photograph of Eleanor holding what appears to be a coke bottle. Actually, I just checked, it looks more like a Purchase, NY product - Pepsi bottle. There's one of FDR too. Man, they should use that in ads!

FDR: We still sell, baby!
ER: Indeed we do!
