Watch AU’s Barry Lynn Debate Religion And Politics!
Should religion have a place in American politics and government?
That’s the question Americans United Executive Director Barry Lynn and three others gathered to discuss last month in Richmond, Va. The televised debate over religion in the public square was hosted by the University of Virginia’s Miller Center of Public Affairs and produced by MacNeil/Lehrer Productions.
Public discussion of church-state separation is all too often reduced to sound-bites and yelling matches on cable news stations. The Miller Center debate, however, was sincere and civil and provided a rare platform for advocates to speak not at, but with, each other.
Barry was joined by biblical scholar Jacques Berlinerblau of Georgetown University in arguing for a complete separation of religion and government. Their opponents were Religious Right leader Chuck Colson of Prison Fellowship Ministries and Bishop Harry Jackson, a Maryland pastor.
The debate will air in its entirety on PBS stations beginning tomorrow evening. Check the list below for scheduling information in your area (all times are local). The debate is also available online at the Miller Center Web site.
