Semmelweis. In 1847. When Baron Lister was all of 20 years old.

I knew "Lister" wasn't the right name, but "Semmelweis" eluded me until I read downthread.

Lister pushed for using sterile instruments and materials that wouldn't harbor infection in surgery some 20 years after Semmelweis pushed for simply washing hands with CaCl2 before handling neonates. Without an explanation for his observation, Semmelweis was mostly ignored.

I find that completely submerging my lettuce in water, and then using a salad spinner is a very good method.
