Why does Pope Paul's coffin
have an upside down cross and the letter "W" on it? Why is it shaped like a tetrahedron?

http://www.religion-cults.com/pope/funeral.htm

He was the first pope who had a white silk cloth placed over his face, a Masonic tradition.

2. It's a M, not a W....
....JPII was a big devotee of Mary.

The same device was part of his coat of arms.

4. wasn't Peter crucified upside down?
First "pope" and all . . .

Just guessing -

Also could that three part device be an allusion to the holy trinity?

6. Yes, but that cross is not upside down.
You're looking at it upside down. It's an M, not a W, and it's a normal cross, not an upside down one.

17. Obviously not, but what does that have to do with the OP?
Because the cross in that picture is upside down, it doesn't follow that the other cross is upside down as well.

Anyway, as to the picture of the chair, the inverted cross is the cross of St. Peter, who, as mentioned elsewhere in this thread, was crucified upside down. Because the pope is technically the heir to St. Peter (the first pope), the inverted cross has become a symbol of the papacy.

19. Bah. The inverted cross as a symbol of the devil...
was invented by satanists who listen to too many Cure songs and cut themselves to feel better.

Of course, the inverted cross as symbol of the Pope was also simply a man-made construction, so what the hey.

Even assuming there is such a thing as "God" or the "devil," it's silly to ascribe to them the authorship of symbols that are unequivocally man-made constructs.

Isn't it embarrassing that the atheists are the ones giving lessons on this thread?

5. Exactly. JPII's coat of arms...
was a cross with an M under two of the cross pieces, the M standing for Mary. The picture on the coffin is a picture of his coat of arms.

Also, the cloth over the face thing is something the Masons took from Catholicism, not the other way around.

13. No other pope was ever
covered like that. Also, none of them had a uniquely shaped coffin. I'm wondering why Pope Paul II.

16. According to the Wiki article about JPII's funeral,
the tradition of the face cover was started by Pope Leo XIII (1876-1903).

21. Popes have been veiled in burial going back to antiquity; likely it's a Jewish tradition
going back before Jesus for burial of priests.

And the red robes have been a traditional burial color and ensemble since antiquity as well.

The coffin shape is ancient, and for many, many years popes have been buried in three coffins - an inner wooden one, a middle one of lead (though I think zinc is used now) and outer one of some other wood.

Like Davis_X_Machina said, it's an 'M' for 'Mary'.

12. Really?
You know, the site source for the photos is not copyrighted and I didn't have to post the link.
I found them from a google image search. I haven't read that site.

Have to admit I posted the link so the skeptics could have some entertainment.

Absolutely.

And no, you didn't have to post a link. I didn't really have to go driving today, either. But I don't see what that has to do with your Catholic conspiracy theories.

The tiara and crossed keys are standard for every pope's arms.
