Dominionist religious group trying to co-opt Vietnam vets?
I received an e-mail today from my local Vietnam Veterans of America chapter asking if we officially, as a chapter, should participate in a local 9/11 "Patriotic Prayer Day" event sponsored by Fresh Fire Ministries.

The accompanying invitation to the chapter seemed pretty innocuous until I got to the part about "the 7 centers of society"--which sounded to me like the "7pillars" of radical Dominionist theology. So I googled the sponsoring group, and, sure enough, they are a Dominionist, "Third Way" organization. (More on Dominion theology at wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominion_Theology )

I replied to the chapter president that this theology is controversial, and our official participation could be taken, or used, as an endorsement of those religious views. He promised to share my concerns with the membership before a decision was made.

To me, this really underscores the importance of vetting the organizations with which we associate, especially in an official capacity as a VVA chapter or other organization. I'm pretty sure we won't be lending our name to this event, but we could easily have wound up being listed as a supporter of this religious group on their websites and in their promotions.

Here's the invitation our chapter received (with some deletions by me):

Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you and the many men and women that have served this country. It goes with out saying, without your service we would not be the Country we are today.

As discussed, I have attached the flyer for the Patriotic Prayer Day. In an effort to advertise for the event we have a banner on Decoro a few blocks down the street from Ralphs on McBean in Valencia. We also have a full paged article on the event in the Signal scheduled to be released this Saturday. The article will also feature our founder of Fresh Fire Intercession Ministries, Dr. Sheryl Reeves, Pastor.

The details with regard to the event is as follows:

Location:
Santa Clarita Central Park Time: 11:00AM to 6:00PM
Theme
: Patriotic Prayer Day

Theme Scripture: Gen 50:20

Purpose
: To commemorate the day on 9-11 when the lives of many were tragically taken by terrorism. Goal: To pray for the grieving families, our troops, for families of fallen soldiers, our community and nation-at-large (including and not limited to: 7 centers of society: government, church, family, education, media, military and businesses).

We look forward to both the attendance and participation of the Vietnam Veterans of America members - Patriotic Prayer Day on Sept, 11, 2010 at Central Park in Santa Clarita.

Please advise me if we can send a representative to your August 15, 2010 meeting to do a presentation.

1. Knowing the way some of these groups operate...
...I wouldn't put it past these Dominionist nuts to list your VVA chapter as a supporter whether you actually support them or not.
