“I am Jesus!” says Oscar Ortega Hernandez captured Whitehouse gunman and Fox News Watcher
Oscar Ortega Hernandez, the man who allegedly fired shots at the White House, recorded a video in September in which he says, “I am the modern-day Jesus Christ that you all have been waiting for.”

So, just another mentally disturbed person, right? Religion had NOTHING to do with it. Nothing at all, right?

2. They always have three names
James Wilkes Booth
Lee Harvey Oswald
Mark David Chapman
Oscar Ortega Hernandez

Nobody ever addresses me and includes my middle name. Guess I'm not an assassin.

4. Accused White House shooter preaches the gospel of pot as the ‘modern-day Jesus’
Before Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez allegedly shot at the White House ... he had other plans for living out a God-given mission: the Oprah show.

Idaho TV station KBOI posted Ortega’s 20-minute video, filmed as an audition tape to get on Oprah, where the suspect describes his philosophy on God, marijuana and how God gave us marijuana.

In the footage, he confesses, “There’s so much more that God needs me to express to the world. It’s not just a coincidence that I look like Jesus. I am the modern-day Jesus Christ that you all have been waiting for.”

Ortega reads slowly and deliberately from a spiral-bound notebook, going from point to point, saying we’re all a part of God’s family and we need to end gang violence, beer pong and alcoholism and rely more on marijuana ...

6. ... Ortega-Hernandez gives style props to Madonna circa 1984; claims that his deceased grandfather
his guardian angel; and talks about drugs, Zion and the Discovery Channel's Shark Week. He also says sex is "for fun," and that marijuana was created "to inspire." If we all just smoked pot and stopped drinking beer, we'd become "hungry for knowledge" and invent stuff to fill "all these empty shipping vessels." ...

It is noteworthy how easily crazy transitions to religious.

8. In this case, I would actually say that it was mental disturbance rather than religion
Obviously he used religious concepts in his delusion; but he was mainly regarding himself as an all-powerful individual. Delusions of grandeur and power are symptoms of some mental illnesses. If he hadn't regarded himself as Jesus, he might have claimed to be a King, or Master of the Universe, or reincarnation of Julius Caesar, etc.

A typically religious person would not say that he *was* Jesus.

says he can raise the dead and magically make blind people see and thinks he's some sort of savior to mankind and talks to his invisible daddy up in the clouds.

10. It's easy to get confused in this age of information overload. Could you perhaps be mixing up two
different stories?

This thread is about the kid from Idaho who wanted to get on Oprah to praise horses, pot, and sex; and when that didn't work out he instead decided to try to shoot POTUS

The other story is from Roman-occupied Judaea, somewhat removed in space and time from the story about the kid from Idaho

It may not help, of course, that the kid from Idaho also seems confused about his story. I dunno: maybe confusion like this is common

23. The thread, of course, is about a kid from Idaho . He seems to have been dealing with
issues such as drugs, gang activity, and sexuality. For a while he seems to have thought marijuana could solve many of the world's problem. He seems later to have developed grandiose cosmic interpretations of his situation: he seems to have believed that the government in general and POTUS in particular were the problem; and he seems to have thought assassination could provide appropriate resolution; and he then seems to have acted, first by obtaining firearms and ammunition, then by shooting at the White House

There are interesting and important issues here, including at-risk youth behaviors and the easy availability of firearms. It might also be worthwhile to inquire how a disaffected and marginalized young man came to adopt a political stance resembling that of the rightwing Idaho militia movement as his thinking became more confused and grandiose

That would seem to be a more useful and productive starting point for analysis, than the approach you suggest

24. It's pretty clear the kid is mentally ill.

Mentally ill folks often come up with crazy ideas, many think of themselves as prophets of God.

Not unlike certain age-old fables that many cling to still today...
