Interesting NY Times story about Kiffin and how USC approached a Tenn recruit
right afterwards....

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/01/13/sports/ncaafootball/13kiffin.html

Here's that part....

Brandon Willis, a defensive lineman from James F. Byrnes High School in Duncan, S.C., was on his way Tuesday to enroll at Tennessee when he heard that Kiffin had been hired at U.S.C., said his father, Gary Willis. He said Orgeron called him after Kiffin’s hiring was announced and said that U.S.C. was “a dream job” for him and the Kiffins. Willis said Orgeron told him that his son was being offered a scholarship to U.S.C.

“You can’t just follow guys like that,” Gary Willis said in a telephone interview. “That’s not what I’m teaching my son.”

Willis and his son were evaluating his 42 scholarship offers Tuesday, but were still bothered by Kiffin’s sudden departure.

“To sit down and tell people stuff and then turn around and do what you do, I don’t like the way it was done, but I can’t control it,” Willis said.

Shows that you fell for a hack marketing campaign.

And in the last 14 years, I've witnessed Five WS Championships, 3 College Football championships, Rosebowls, and other WS games.

And in the last 14 years, the Cowboys have won only 1 playoff game, which was last week. Congrats.

I have witnessed Five SB championships and eight NFC championships, 3 WS championships (albeit, the first one over the Yankees, I do not remember), 2 College Football championships, Rosebowls.

And in that time, the Jets won a playoff game.

BTW, I just find that I diehard NY'er went to school on the west coast. Almost as funny as a certain west coaster who is a diehard SEC school fan.

36. So this is what you think? Nice post...
Of course I sign up at DU under fake names. It's called being a zombie and everyone does it .. especially people like myself who were TS'd unfairly. Maybe you should report me to skinner and he can get the ball rolling so I get sent to Guantanamo Bay. Imagine that! I sign up on an internet discussion board under a fake name. Oh the humanity.

And who cares about discussing sports rationally. I listened to KNBR Sportsphone 68 in San Francisco on the way home from work, and I heard nothing but irrational talk about McGwire.
It was great. And it was great because it made things interesting.

Anyone who knows me realizes I like to mix things up whether it's discussing politics or discussing sports. Otherwise it's fucking boring. Who likes preaching to the choir? BORING!

The problem is you guys cannot handle it.

Do you think I really lose sleep over whether the Lions keep the Thanksgiving game, even though they fucking suck? But it's a joy to rant about how Detroit deserves to lose the game in order to get people riled up.

..snip

Nice post, Yavin.

Don't confuse us with the fans of the team of the crimson socks. It is they that believe they were being tested by God when they lost for 86 years.

Yankee fans root for an organization that will do what it takes to win.

24. Fork. About Hockey's Winter Classic.
I've been mulling over this long and hard. Move that deal to Christmas Day. It's hard enough to compete with the Bowls. On Christmas, you'd have a lot of bored families yearning to watch something besides the heinous NBA. I gaurantee you, a new audience for the sport. Hell. I'd be all over it. Against the Bowls... just tough. Especially with the intrigue of this past New Years Day Bowls. Just a thought.

32. It's done real well for the NHL where it is.
It's ratings have increased each of the three years (their ratings in general have been climbing since the strike a few years back...it's a much better product with the rule changes they implemented during the strike). And the buzz surrounding it has gotten bigger each year as well, so they're drawing in new fans anyways. Not only aren't they moving it, they might add a second game (just rumors, and many are against it, myself included). Plus, at 1 in the afternoon people are just getting over their New Year's hangover, so it's the perfect lead in to the bowl games. By kickoff at 4 everyone should be ready to start drinking again. :)

Non-hockey fans don't notice, but the NHL rarely schedules many Sunday games as they try to avoid competing with the NFL, but their ratings must be showing them they can still draw an audience against the college game, even the bowls. I think it would do worse on Christmas, as that's a "family" day and not a party day, an atmosphere the NHL surely wants to foster for the Winter Classic (though they may not openly say so), just like the NFL does with the Super Bowl.

Hockey fans have already associated New Years Day with the game now (I know I do...already looking forward to next year), and hockey has learned to appeal to the hardcore fan first and then to the casual fan second. They want new fans, but not at the expense of the hardcore fans. Expansion taught them the lesson that hockey will never appeal to casual fans in a large segment of the country simply because it's not a part of the culture in the southern states and never will be. Rink time costs a fortune (about $300 per hour) and there aren't any frozen ponds in places like Dallas or Tampa, so kids never pick the sport up young unless it's organized leagues, a costly proposition (used goalie gear runs about $700 to $1,000, for instance...and that's kid's goalie gear. I spent 3 grand on mine when I was 22). I think hockey is comfortable with it's slow growth and doesn't want to overreach again, and I know they're thrilled with how the Winter Classic has been received. They aren't going to tamper with it, I don't think. In other words, they're trying to appeal mainly to people like me more than you bowl game fans. ;)

Personally, if you want to get into the game the best bet is to wait until the playoffs and watch some of that. Very fast, very intense, and very fun. Here's a taste of some great hockey....check out the hit at the 55 second mark!

Let me get this straight. You, and the clique, start calling me names, like stupid. Then, I respond. Then the level of discourse gets worse, and we just start calling each other names.

Then, you go running to the Mods to get me banned. Is that how this works?

You find someone who doesn't go along with the majority opinion, and then you all attack.

Have you seen people down here go running to the mods? Of course you haven't. You just want to be a victim and that scenario is the only one you can think of to justify said victimhood. You posted something that many thought was dumb. If you can't take the heat get the fuck out of the Sports Forum and stop whining like a stuck pig.

You find someone who doesn't go along with the majority opinion, and then you all attack.

I found someone who posted something I felt was stupid. It has nothing to do with the "majority". Get over it. Like I say, you want to be a victim, as if every one us hasn't gotten hammered down here at one time or another.

Wow, and I thought that High School was over. I guess not.

The fact that people disagreeing with your post makes you wet your keks tells me you aren't even up to the High School level yet.

It's hilarious you're even posting about College Football. For a guy who despises it, you have a helluva lot of self-proclaimed knowledge of it. I know...a USC grad. Your theory on the fastest team always winning has been blown to smithereens, courtesy of the Big Ten. And you're having a tough time admitting you were oh so wrong.

29. One Data Point (The Big Ten Recent Bowl Success) Does Not Obviate The Thesis
There have been about 10 bowl seasons wherein the Big Ten got eviscerated, and there's this one that went against the trend.

Maybe this season didn't have any speed burners on offense like seasons past. My theory still holds.

But back on point, I don't think that college football in general is a quality sport. I'm sorry. It's just not, even though I am a USC fan. I root for my school in whatever we do.

As cynical as we all are, jaded or not, this is the story of a father trying to do right by his son. And here are these corporatist millionaire assholes thinking that they'll always have one up on the bumpkins. What the fuck? I hope that anyone who thinks that treating boys like champion livestock rots in hell. Don't tell me there is way to defend a man who treats people like that. I would hope that anyone celebrating Kiffin's hire at USC would take five minutes to consider what it must be like at this very moment to be one of his new recruits at Tennessee. I bet those boys have just received the most unsavory welcome to adulthood that anyone could.

53. This is a trend
http://blogs.thestateonline.net/jperson/2009/10/28/reaves-talks-usc-recruiting/

From October of 2009:

Talked to Tennessee QBs coach and former USC assistant David Reaves this morning for a story that will run in Thursday’s editions.

Reaves angered many Gamecock fans – and was criticized publicly by former USC tailback and Columbia sports talk radio host Duce Staley – for recruiting players who were committed to the Gamecocks after he arrived at UT in December.

In curious news, Reaves, who is Kiffin's brother-in-law, is still on Tennessee's staff, and rumour has it that he wasn't told ahead of time about Kiffin's leaving, learning it from the news.
