Giants robbed of win on bad call..
As you can see, Travis Ishikawa looks to be clearly safe at home carrying what should have been the winning run in the bottom of the ninth and a 4 game sweep of the Mets by the Giants. Instead, because of plate umpire Phil Cuzzi's bad call, the game continued with the Mets winning 4-3 in 10.

I'm not complaining about a conspiracy or anything, these kind of things happen. It was just some bad luck for the Giants. However, it does seem as if the officiating has been particularly bad lately. From Joyce ruining a perfect game,, to some inexcusable refereeing at the World Cup, now the Giants to a lesser extent on Sunday.... We've seen some terrible calls which have directly changed the outcome of games.

The solution? I don't know..probably at least a limited replay system, but these kind of mistakes need to be addressed, we're seeing far too many of them.

1. This happens all the time
That was a lot closer than most I've seen - Tiger's Gallaraga one I can think of

2. The Joyce/Galaragga call
was obviously a much bigger deal....and everybody involved, particularly Joyce, has to be given a lot of credit for the way it was handled afterward. How often do you see an umpire apologize?

And while bad calls may happen a lot, it just seems to me like there's been far too many of them this year which have changed the outcome of games..

3. That umpire's name is Phil Cuzzi
And he is a bad umpire. He once got fired as a Minor League umpire. Cuzzi, West, Hohn, Hernandez, Bucknor. All crap umpires who should not have jobs in MLB.

4. I agree with that..
Cuzzi had a bad game yesterday, had the Giants won, the Mets would have had some reasons to complain too. Angel Hernandez has screwed over the Giants royally in the past, and West has screwed over just about everybody, with a bad attitude to boot.

I'm not sure about Cuzzi or Hohn, but I know in polls taken of MLB players, West, Hernandez and Bucknor are always ranked among the worst umpires in baseball. I don't know why they're still working.

5. He's my hero
Let's go Mets

It's about time the Mets got the benefit of a bad call. Usually, the Mets get it in the neck on close calls. BTW, I am a Met fan.

6. On the positive side...
the Giants damn near swept the Mets -- no pushovers. Impressive, albeit brief, home stand.

8. Baseball sure can be a funny game
The Giants, for the most part, have looked great the past couple weeks. Even with yesterday's loss, they've won 10 of 13..following right on the heels of a 7 game losing streak. They've got to start winning in the NL West though..otherwise that's going to be their downfall.

9. What better way than to start tonight...
Bumgarner vs. McDonald, then Lincecum and Zito Tuesday and Wednesday. Three Giants pitchers playing after impressive starts.

10. Only if MLB follows the lead of FIFA
In fairness though, Joyce is considered a good umpire by almost everybody, but Cuzzi..geez.

Look at this angle of the play at home plate, doesn't even look close:

11. Voted best umpire voted by players
Even after the perfect game mistake.

Jim Joyce may have cost Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga a perfect game, but he's still the best blue in the business.

According to ESPN.com, Joyce was voted the game's best umpire in an ESPN The Magazine Baseball Confidential poll of 100 major leaguers.
The poll surveyed 100 big leaguers and asked them a variety of questions about umpiring and the potential institution of instant replay for close calls. Players polled were asked to name the three best and worst umpires in their opinion.

Joyce showed up on 53 percent of the ballots for best umpire, which was easily the highest score. Tim McClelland finished second on 34 percent of the ballots, and Jim Wolf appeared on 15 percent of the ballots.

Joyce admittedly missed a call at first base in a June 2 game that cost Galarraga a perfect game, but an unnamed player called Joyce "seriously one of the best umpires around." In regards to the Galarraga fiasco, the player added: "He always makes it fair, so players love him. Everyone makes mistakes, and it's terrible that this happened to him."

CB Bucknor was rated the game's worst umpire by players polled, appearing on 37 percent of the surveys. Joe West finished second at 35 percent. West, known for having a very short temper, was also named “baseball’s quickest hook” for his tendency to eject players at a moment’s notice. Angel Hernandez was third at 22 percent.

Added one extra paragraph to include who was named the worst.---http://www.nesn.com/2010/06/jim-joyce-best-umpire-in-baseball-according-to-players.html

13. Thanks Jon
those three are always consistently at the bottom of these surveys. And it seems like most everyone has a great deal of respect for Joyce. Check out Cuzzi's remarks when asked if he had seen the replay of his blown call:

"I'll look at it, but I figured I'd eat first,” he said, laughing. “He made a decent attempt to put the tag on him. That’s what it looked to me, and that’s why I called him out.”

What? Ishikawa was called out because the Mets catcher "made a decent attempt to put the tag on him"?

12. Instant Replay
Instant replay not only corrects bad calls, but it changes the culture of officiating by forcing the umps to work together on calls. No ump wants to be overruled on the field. So, they should work in tandem to make sure that the calls are right.

Instant replay should work on a challenge system with each team getting one challenge on plays on the bases. With two challenges in the post season. Or the plays can be reviewed by an ump in the press box like college football.

15. Sounds good

and after yesterday, there's been a lot of renewed calls for replay too. It'll fall on deaf years like usual though.

The umpires already get together sometimes on disputed calls, in order to get them right. I've seen them do it. Didn't happen yesterday though...and there's an excellent chance at least one other ump was in a position to see the play correctly, but it's like an unwritten rule for one umpire not to overrule another..which is BS, because getting the call correct should outweigh any other considerations.
