Youk done for season?
BOSTON (AP)—The Boston Red Sox put first baseman Kevin Youkilis on the 15-day disabled list with a thumb injury Tuesday and acknowledged that his season could be over.

Youkilis tore a muscle in his right thumb during Monday night’s 6-5 loss to Cleveland. He lined out to end the first inning, grabbed his hand in pain and stayed in the game until the third.

“It’s a very unusual injury—not a common occurrence for hitters to have this,” Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein said. “It’s not clear how long it’ll be or it’s not clear if he’ll need surgery. If he does need surgery, it can be fixed.”

Epstein said the injured muscle is one that helps move the thumb. Asked if surgery would end Youkilis’ season, Epstein said: “Realistically, yes.” He said Youkilis was going to see a hand specialist.

3. J.D. Drew is starting to look like MR. Reliability for the Sox
They've already lost their starting second baseman, catcher, left fielder, center fielder, #1 starter (Beckett), #4 Starter (Dice-K), #5 Starter (Buchholtz) along with the backup catcher, backup 3rd baseman and utility OF to the DL at various times this season, and now Youk. If they manage to make the playoffs, Francona deserves the manager of the year.

4. They're not gonna make the playoffs, and, unfortunately, Francona
will be around next year...he'll get a pass for their crappy play because of the injuries...they have lost games they should have won not because of the injuries, but because of a lack of desire and/or focus.

5. UPDATE: Kevin Youkilis out for season
espnboston.com / August 5th, 2010

BOSTON -- If the Boston Red Sox are going to pull off a long shot and catch the Yankees or the Rays for a playoff spot, they're going to have to do it without Kevin Youkilis, their star first baseman.

An MRI performed in Cleveland on Thursday confirmed a tear in a muscle in Youkilis' right thumb, finishing the team's most consistently productive hitter for the season. He will have surgery to repair the tear in Cleveland on Friday.

Manager Terry Francona said that Youkilis' thumb will be immobilized for six weeks after the surgery and then will be re-evaluated. Francona joked that in order for Youkilis to return to the Red Sox lineup this season, "We'd have to drag it out to around Thanksgiving and I don't know how we're going to do that."

SNIP

Already this year, pitchers Josh Beckett, Clay Buchholz and Daisuke Matsuzaka have spent time on the DL, and position players Dustin Pedroia, Victor Martinez, Jacoby Ellsbury, Mike Lowell, Jason Varitek, Mike Cameron and Jed Lowrie have been on the shelf, too, for varying lengths of time.
