1. running backs - quarterbacks - wide receivers - tight ends.
Pants-

You need to devote an hour of your time.
Go to the site that is hosting your league.
Go into the draft room.
Rank your players into a "queue" choose the top players in the order above.
Set your draft room as such you can always see the TOP player that is left in the round that you are drafting in.
Turn ON the "auto-pilot" if you are unsure and it will pick the top players left for you.
Turn OFF the auto-pilot if you want to select a specific player.

Typically...

4 or 5 running backs
2 quarterbacks
4 or 5 wide receivers
2 tight ends
1 defense
1 kicker
1 flex player if your league allows it.

ALWAYS choose the best player on the board to fill the menu above and you should be OK.

2. I'm a purist also. I cannot root for players and teams other than mine.
That would be The Dallas Cowboys. End of story.

3. That is why I remove all NFC West players from my queue
Except for Cardinals' players

Other than them I don't really care who wins but FF does have a way increasing my interest for games I wouldn't normally care about and also to continue caring about games that people lost interest in already. I recall last year NYG pretty much blew out Washington by halftime but I was rooting for Santana Moss to get receptions all the way to the end! :D

5. you can go to many websites
like yahoo or ESPN and get free rankings of players at every position.

One way to do it is to go into it with a plan:

one simple option is to pick up a RB, WR, RB, WR, QB with your first five picks simply going with the best available player. After that you'd look for a TE, a backup QB, more RB/WR and the last two rounds of the draft pick up a defense and a kicker.

another is to try and get the best QB (say Brees or Rodgers) and then fill in with RBs/WRs.

The first option might be better because QB are fairly deep this year.

6. Final score adjusted by the spread is all that matters
I'd root for the Gators and bathe in hideous cheese before joining a fantasy league.

I'll never forget the first time I became aware of fantasy football. In 1989 I was working as sportsbook supervisor at the Horseshoe. We had a manual board and I'd write the 7s and 3s in the quarter box as someone scored. One guy kept asking how long the FG was. Then he'd inquire about stats. For weeks I had no idea why he cared until another supervisor said he's probably a fantasy geek, a new obsession. I'd never heard of fantasy football but instantly I knew that strangling a guy like that couldn't be considered a crime.
