In yet another disruptive twist in this increasingly bizarre 49ers season, starting strong safety Michael Lewis requested his release and left the team.
Lewis' agent, Rodney Williams, said his client was told his starting role wouldn't change when a report surfaced earlier in the week that Lewis and linebacker Takeo Spikes would be benched. On Friday morning, however, Lewis was informed that the team planned on phasing rookie Taylor Mays into Lewis' strong safety role. Lewis responded by vacating the 49ers' Santa Clara facility.
