Alex Smith out..Troy Smith to start for 49ers..

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith will miss Sunday's game against the Denver Broncos in London because of a separated left shoulder.

49ers coach Mike Singletary said Wednesday that Smith will be sidelined for two to three weeks and Troy Smith will start for the Niners (1-6) at Wembley Stadium.

"Troy Smith gives us a good opportunity to win this game," Singletary said. "He has enough of the offense to play."

Alex Smith was injured on a sack in the third quarter of last Sunday's 23-20 loss to the Carolina Panthers. David Carr replaced him, but was passed over for this weekend's game.

"I talked to David Carr about it. He understands," Singletary said.

Troy Smith was signed in December and has not yet played a game for the 49ers.

What is going on here? David Carr is the #2 QB. I don't believe Troy Smith has even played a down. And what happened to Nate Davis? It's a rough time to be a 49ers fan..at least we've got the Giants.

Hand someone the start -- regardless of experience -- and challenge them to play well. Good luck, Troy Smith... you're going to need a ton of it.

after seeing what Carr did in the Carolina game maybe it's worth it giving Troy Smith a shot. He's got a stronger arm, more mobility, and he sure knows the tendencies of Ted Ginn Jr. well enough..

Thing is, if Singletary doesn't trust Carr, why in the heck is he the #2 QB?

Morgan played himself into Singletary's doghouse, I believe. So your rationale makes sense. I like the mobility angle too.

I haven't a clue about Carr, though we don't know if that was Singeltary's decision to sign him as #2 or a misguided doofus in the front office
