NHL Simply Not Going To Bother Reaching Out To Hispanics
NEW YORK—Though other professional sports leagues have made concerted efforts to attract new fans in the emerging demographic, the NHL is just not even going to try to reach out to Hispanics, league officials said Monday. "Truthfully, at this point it's not even worth it; I have enough on my plate right now just trying to get youth hockey leagues to accept half-price tickets to these games," Commissioner Gary Bettman said. "I'm not going to tell Hispanics or Latinos they can't come, but we have a lot more to worry about than looking up the Spanish word for 'Penguins' or painting the puck the colors of the Mexican flag for Cinco de Mayo." Bettman added that before the league even thinks about such outreach programs, it has to figure out why, despite its best efforts, North American white people still haven't embraced the sport.

1. "just trying to get youth hockey leagues to accept half-price tickets to these games"

:P

And in those Sunbelt cities with NHL teams, that's probably true.

21. That's a good one. The horse racing "industry" is having problems here, too...
though we are "banking" on slots solving all of our horse racing and everything else here.

I suppose the revenues will go to supporting to education just as the lotteries have too!

:sarcasm:

22. Funny, except that a horse breaking into a lab to get a ketamine fix would more likely.....

..... be a suburban or rural one.

5. The Canadiens' Scott Gomez could not be reached for comment
:P

Seriesly, here in the Bay Area, Sharks fans come in all different colors, whether or not they go particularly well with teal. :-) I once heard a guy on a train talking about "Los Tiburones" on his cell phone, en espanol.

Of course, the article doesn't mention that the NHL is probably the most international sport in America, but that's ok. ;)

10. Should be corrected to North American White Southerners.
The same ones who like Palin and McCain, but not hockey. ;)

After 113,411 showed up for an outdoor college hockey game last month, still want to talk about the Pirates? :D

11. **SNORT**
The ones who like Palin are the ones who like hockey.

:hide:

Considering that she can see most of the games in Russia from her back porch, I would assume they are the most excited about hockey! Be thankful she has not tried to shoot them from a helicopter for disrupted her photo-op!

:P

15. Holy shit, your sister is related to Palin....

:P

13. LOL
I heard Palins are moving to Arizona. McCain is already here.

I still like hockey, however I don't like them :)

Phoenix seems to be doing alright so far. I don't have cable so I catch what I can from highlight shows. Doing pretty good last 10 games or so.

14. The Yotes are doing well!
Real good coaching out there. The West will be a bloodbath to get out of though. Same for the East. This might the most unpredictable and wide open year I can ever remember for the league (been watching since intently since '74). There's a dozen teams that I feel have a legitimate shot at the Cup this year, the Coyotes among them. I can't recall a time when the league has been this close in terms of genuine chances at the Cup. As if the Stanley Cup playoffs weren't good enough. This year could be full of surprises. :)
