worst match play defeat in professional history (someone won an Amateur event at 10-8 once) but no one has ever posted a 9-8 in men's play in the US, UK or Europe. There were a couple of women in the 30's apparently who did.

Win 9 holes in a row, and you're up 9 & 9. If you then lose 9 holes in a row, the match is halved.

Win the 10th hole, and you win 10 & 8.

You can't win an 18 hole match in less than 10 holes.
