The Wonderlic Score
Yesterday, I got a chance to see what the Wonderlic Test is about. Msn.com had an article about the test and the athletes who scored poorly on the test. Msn.com also had a few sample questions from the test. Seeing what the test is actually about has not changed my opinion about Vince Young, but it has made me think that Young's low scores on the test show something much more disturbing about the education system in America at both the high school and college level.

Presently, for me the real problem with Young's low scores on the wonderlic test is that the school system in this country failed him and other students. This test shows that Young and the other athletes who have scored low on this test were not given the educations they were supposed to get. The Wonderlic test tests basic math and logic, so if kids score 6s and 16s on the test that means they most likely were not taught basic skills at either the high school or college level. Instead they were used to sell jerseys and tickets and to bring in big donations from members of the booster clubs.

I understand that some people might saw that Young and other athletes do not need to know basic math and logic in that they can afford accounts to do that. To that I say there have been a number of athletes who lost a portion of the earnings due to being duped by their agents and accounts. In addition, there have been a number of athletes who have retired poor even after spending years playing professional sports. Some of that was due to wasting money on women, but some of it came from not knowing how to manage money. In addition, what about the kids who will not become mega-million dollar athletes? Some of these kids are also leaving school without a real education in basic skills. What about them being able to make a living for themselves?

I do not dislike the sports culture, I actually like the sports culture. I think sports are great. However, if one of the main arguments against paying students for playing sports is that they get a free education we then have a problem when those students do not get the education they are supposedly promised. Something must be done and principals of these high schools and the presidents of these colleges must be held accountable for allowing some of their students to leave high school and college without an education.

(Gets off shiftless lazy ass and does a DU search) Yes, I remember it well.

Young said that the "rumors" about his low score were "disrespectful," mysteriously passing up the opportunity to say they were "untrue." The mystery was solved when his agent was forced to admit that Young had taken the test a SECOND time!

P.S. The thread contains a link to twelve actual Wonderlic questions.
