Seahawks kicker to wear heated pants vs. Packers

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/playoffs07/news/story?id=3187946

SEATTLE -- Seattle Seahawks kicker Josh Brown says he'll wear heated warm-up pants in the freezing weather at Saturday's playoff game in Green Bay.

Brown says he has equipped his pants with battery-powered heaters for the calves, thighs and hamstrings.

Brown told KIRO Radio that no matter how low the temperature drops, his legs will be 75 degrees.

Brown says kickers, who spend most of the game on the sideline, have to work harder to stay loose in cold weather by walking around, practicing kicks or using heaters.

2. Can you say...product endorsement?
Good for him. Kickers need to supplement their income.

4. Hey Josh,
way to make kickers look like even bigger pussies. Jesus Christ, does this guy realize he's playing football? Probably some weak-ass, warm-weather SEC guy.

5. Or like that candy ass Brett Favre from Southern Miss
Josh Brown, born in Tulsa, College - Nebraska. The Cornhuskers must be in the SEC North.

6. Nebraska - Big 12.
I think Brown knows he's playing football, which means he know if he shanks a kick for the win just because "it's cold out" people in Seattle will think even less of him then if he makes the kick wearing heated pants. Given the choice between "looking tough" and making the kick, I'd rather have my kicker make the kick too. Besides, no one was going to think he's tough even he didn't wear the pants, so what's the difference?

9. Well Josh's legs are already padded even without the use
of his illegal mobile heat warmer.

Plus he can layer underneath as much as he wants, even without the battery warmer.

Farve's hands are completely exposed.

And I doubt the hand warmer keeps his hands anywhere close to 75 degrees.

11. LOL. That's going too far. Might even be a too many
players on the field penalty.

14. you know these are his warmup pants, right?
the ones he wears standing on the sideline? not while he is kicking? wanna bet that one the sideline, Brett Favre wears gloves? maybe even heated ones? probably a hat of some sort, as well.

15. Well, I don't have any knowledge of what Farve does on
the sidelines to stay warm, so I can't comment specifically on your hunch.

There are obviously portable sideline heaters that anyone can stand near.

I'm just saying this is a little overboard on Josh's part.

Maybe he should just dress like this?

16. i don't think it's overboard
it is likely that he will be involved, over three hours, in 4-5 plays. making one mistake on any of those plays will cost him his job. he doesn't have time to warm up, so he has to stay warm. there's only a couple of hundred thousand dollars on the line for him. no biggie.

17. Well, maybe he should at least hand over a pair of
his super-heated 75 degree pants to the Green Bay kicker so he can make sure things are fair.

13. Like I needed on more reason to root against the Seahawks
We will be a split household on Saturday, that's for sure. It's bad enough that their QB is the brother-in-law of nutbag Elizabeth Hasselback, not to mention that there's something funny about the whole team. Sean Alexander currently has an ad out promoting a mega church, and don't get me started on Holmgren, he annoys me in almost every possible way, not least of which was that he deliberately sat Sean Alexander a couple of years ago to prevent him from getting the NFL rushing record that year (he was one yard shy - Holmgren must know full well that this is a contractual bargaining chip). Any coach that would deliberately deny a player the opportunity to set a record has a few screws loose, IMO - at least in that case, ONE YARD - it wasn't as if it was piling on the other team or anything. Now the kicker turns out to be a wimp. Qwest Field is not actually very warm. It's off the water and can get fairly windy and chilly (though you don't have to heat up your legs). Strange, but what you'd expect from people in this latte land I currently reside in.

19. I'm no Seahawks fan but this discussion is ridiculous!
Every team has access to warming or cooling equipment and they use it. It's not just a matter of comfort. Cold muscles are more prone to injury and overheated players are more likely to get cramps or become dehydrated.

Teams Looking for Game Plan to Combat Cold
By JOHN BRANCH

Giants quarterback Eli Manning has a hand muff around his waist, and a little zippered compartment inside holds a disposable warmer. Punter Jeff Feagles has heated insoles to keep his feet warm. Running back Reuben Droughns rubs a homemade concoction he calls hot sauce on his chest. And linebacker Antonio Pierce smears an entire tube of Vaseline all over his body, trying to lock the warmth in his pores. “Lubed up,” he called it.

<snip>

These days, even the benches are heated, from the inside. Blowers blast the sideline with warm air. The N.F.L. requires home teams to provide visitors with the same sideline amenities, but visitors may carry extra heaters — or, in hot weather, coolers and fans.

<snip>

Two trunks were filled with capes, which have been a fashion staple in bad weather for years. Others held gray water-repellent jackets (likely to be handy Sunday), hats, gloves, socks and undergarments. Four pairs of shoes were packed for each player, with different cleats for various conditions on artificial turf.

Each player will be given a muff to tie around his waist, and the little warmers to stuff inside. Most linemen, for reasons more to do with pride than practicality, shun them.

Feagles is not the only one to wear heated insoles; defensive end Justin Tuck is among several others. Cornerback Sam Madison often wears three or four undershirts and three pairs of socks. Madison adds a tight batting glove under his football gloves; others wear latex examination gloves inside.

Droughns, a Californian whose career has taken him through Detroit, Denver and Cleveland, mixes several muscle-easing, strong-smelling balms, then applies it. Offensive linemen have an untold pact prohibiting long sleeves, but some have been known to rub Vaseline or other balms on their arms to serve as an invisible coating.

As you point out, teams use all kinds of devices to minimize the effects of the elements.
