Hank Steinbrenner Vows to Restore Order to the Baseball Universe

Hank Steinbrenner has provided his share of Boss-like comments in the offseason, his first as one of the principal leaders running the New York Yankees.

He's made verbal digs at former manager Joe Torre and inserted himself during the contract negotiations with Alex Rodriguez, as well as the race for the services of pitcher Johan Santana.

The latest, no doubt, will send Boston Red Sox fans into a frenzy.

Steinbrenner, apparently trying to emphasize that he has no fear of the Yankees' American League competition, has amped up the rivalry between the two teams, intentionally or not.

1. Ha Ha Ha
What an idiot!

""Red Sox Nation?" What a bunch of that is," he said in an interview with The New York Times' Play magazine. "That was a creation of the Red Sox and ESPN, which is filled with Red Sox fans."

Umm, I think not.

and isn't as competent at running things as his dad. He has, however, learned to open his big mouth if that's the only way to get headlines.

5. Ole Hank should take a trip to any bathroom stall in Cooperstown
and read how many "Yankess Sucks" are written on the walls. He should join a fantasy league and see how many "Yankees Suck"come through loud and clear in the team names and message boards.

8. A little distortion, here (another comment from the article)...

"Not even Torre, a favorite of Yankees fans, was immune. In late October, Hank Steinbrenner had sent a verbal missile in Torre's direction. "Where was Joe's career in '95 when my dad hired him?" he said to the New York Post. "My dad was crucified for hiring him ... Let's not forget what my dad did in giving him that opportunity -- and the great team he was handed."

IIRC George wasn't exactly tearing up the league. The "great team" that was "handed" to Torre, was the 1995 team that lost a 2-0 lead to Seattle in the Division series. It's not like he was handed a world series champion or anything. Steinbrenner wasn't exactly at the top of his game either, then, having made the playoffs for the first time since 1981 (I believe the Yankees longest stretch). I don't remember if SNL was still doing the "George Steinbrenner death watch" by 1995, but at one point they were joking that the only way the Yankees would ever make the playoffs is if Steinbrenner died, because he wouldn't sell the team, and he couldn't run it for shit.

10. That 95 was a good team
and the 94 team was the best in the AL. And the Yankees added Jeff Nelson and Tino Martinez for the 96 season. Torre was lucky to get the Yankees job and didn't act with much class this offseason.

13. 95' was a good team... not a GREAT team.
He wasn't "handed" a world series champion, as IMHO, Steinbrenner implies. The Yankees lineup was dramatically different in 96 compared to the 1994 team with an almost completely different infield and pitching staff.

14. yeah
the 96 team was more talented. He was given a great team year after year and acted like he deserved all the credit when they won and none of the blame when they lost.

15. How can Steinbrenner have kids named both Hal and Hank?
Aren't they both diminutives of Henry? It's like having kids named Kate and Kathy.

16. I think that might be their actual names
Edited on Mon Mar-03-08 10:57 PM by hughee99
rather than versions of Henry. Either that, or maybe George Steinbrenner is on the George Foreman program and uses the nicknames to avoid confusion,
