KANSAS VERSUS MEMPHIS
Now that the NC and UCLA riffraff have been kicked to the curb (by substantial margins) but we won't bring that up, time to pick the winner of the only game in town.

The rockem sockem game Monday may go to overtime but I'll take the Jayhawks by no more then two points in the best championship game in a long, long time.

1. KU has 1 guard who can match up with Memphis' perimeter. We'll see if that's enuff.

5. This wasn't about revenge
This was about the Bill and the kids. Hopefully we'll start getting some respect from the sports announcers and media for both the Jayhawks and the Big XII. We've got a great team and we've got a great conference.

Jayhawks deserve respect. We had a hell of a football season and we're having a hell of a basketball season.

6. Naw, there was revenge...at least for lots of the fans...
...lots of bitterness over his exit. Maybe the players didn't go in with that attitude, but the fans sure as heck did.

7. I've lived in Lawrence most of my life
and many of us were glad to see Old Roy go. You have no idea how happy many of us were when he left. But then, what do I know? I was born in Lawrence, went to KU and worked at KU. Roy wasn't as popular as he and the national media would like people to think.

9. Well, I read a column stating that they were partying last night
like they'd won it all...quoting people about how they hated Roy. Could be media hype, but I wouldn't blame people if they hated him after he left.

11. The Journal-World hates the KU Athletic department
The paper sued the university to try to find out what salaries within the athletic department were. They've been pissed ever since their buddy Roy left and they lost their exclusive contract with KU to rebroadcast games.

Yeah, there were people who were upset when Roy left but they are more of the fair-weather type of fans. You know the type. The ones who don't know or care about basketball until we're having a good season. I've been going to games for years. I remember years when I could sit just about anywhere I wanted to in the fieldhouse because people weren't going to games. Hell, I didn't have to start buying season tickets until the mid-80's when Larry came to town and it became "cool" to like basketball again.

As for Roy, personally I was damned glad he left. His whole plan was to run up and down the court, wear the other team out and shoot. He rarely, if ever, talked about defense. He was never a good bench coach and he will never be one. He played one way and didn't like change. He also holds onto time-outs like he'll get a prize if he goes a season without using one. Not calling a TO during KU's early run last night put the game out of reach for the Tarheels. Not to mention that he's a giant egotist. As an example:

Roy Williams' friends call him "The Committee." That's because he makes all the decisions. All of them. He decides when to meet for golf, where to eat, how much to bet. He decides where to vacation and who will come along and where everybody will stay and who will drive.

"Check with The Committee," friends will say whenever an issue comes up. http://apse.dallasnews.com/contest/2003/writing/over250/over250.columns.third2-1.html

As for the partying, yep there was a party in town. My nephew called me at halftime and said the party was already in full swing. Lawrence is a college town and is always up for a party.

4. How about those Jayhawks!
They've been playing team ball all season long and it is paying off, big time!

After watching the pre-game shows we were trying to figure out if the sports people were Heelophiles or Hawkaphobes. Did I mention that I loves me some Jay Bilas? He was one of the few who saw beyond the UNC hype and gave us our props!

Beak 'em Hawks!

8. The local paper
had their predictions and all six of their sports yahoos picked UNC to kick ass ... The Jayhawks are so bad that they will be either the third or fourth number one seed to get booted out of the tournament. My Wife is in Topeka this weekend visiting her Mom who is in the hospital with some respiratory problems. She's doing so-so. My wife went to a gathering of Jayhawk fans last night with her brother and they had a great time. I seldom am up past 9:00 but I was up to the end last night. Go Hawks Monday Night. We haven't had a riproaring final game in our house since 94 when the Hogs Beat Duke.

14. Don't forget that both Calipari and Self began their BB careers at KU
under the master Larry Brown. Three of the four teams in the FF have Kansas roots.

A little something from Late Night at the Phog. A video about KU's basketball tradition and history. I hope you enjoy it.

15. I am biased
But I think Memphis will win. They (we) are playing out of our minds. Calipari gives them a lot of freedom and that is confusing other teams. Plus we have depth.

We'll see. I almost started a poll here.

I wasn't particularly happy about the announcers or the officials at the game with UCLA. Hopefully that will change when we play Kansas, a team that is not on one of the coasts.

Go heartland!

16. I heard Ed Hightower was going to be one of the refs tonight
He doesn't like my Jayhawks. :scared:

On the other hand Hightower is the official that made the call that sent Manning to the line in the 1988 Championship game. Danny hit the freethrows and it sealed the game for us.

I think it will be a great game and I'm looking forward to it.

19. GO JAYHAWKS but
somewhat of a downer here Mabus. My wonderful mother in law is in the hospital in Topeka and not doing well at all. My wife and all her siblings are bedside. Hopefully she and the Jayhawks can rise above it all tonight. A prayer for a wonderful ass kicking Kansas democrat would be appreciated.

28. Hello My Friend
My wife called this morning and Mom had a good night. Rested peacefully and breathing easier. My wife and her two sisters spent the night in the hospital and she said the hospital sounded more like a sports bar last night then a hospital (St Francis, Topeka.) Thanks for asking. Mom is still pretty messed up but the doctors have stopped poking on her. Maybe the Jawhawks helped all the patients in that hospital last night.

21. I think it's going to be Memphis
They've been hot all tournament. Their guards are playing great, Calipari is a great coach. I just think it's their time. That being said, Kansas was so on fire the other day, that you can't discount that. Plus they have a deep talent pool, and, also a great coach. Truly should be a fantastic game.
